Work Unit:
This unit exists to perform accurate, timely and legally defensible chemical, microbiological and instrumental analysis of samples taken by the Department’s inspectors. These samples include livestock feed, pet food, fertilizers, composts, meat, eggs, surface and groundwater, vegetation, including cannabis and soil.
Purpose of Position:
This position oversees all aspects of the laboratory operations for the Biochem Laboratory, including managing staff, execution of effective staff training, ensuring staff competency and proficiency, adherence to safety and quality standards, budgeting, contract management and resource allocation.
Primary Duties:
Duty: Management and Supervision:
* Supervises the laboratory work unit staff.
* Reviews and approves electronic timesheets, leave requests, provides supervisory review and approval of position descriptions (PDs).
* Monitors and assesses employee performance and performs interim and annual performance appraisals.
* Advances a positive work environment and recognizes achievements of staff.
* Ensures that the BCL laboratory is adequately staffed commensurate with customer requirements and anticipated sample workloads.
Duty: Budgeting and Financial Activities
* Plans, tracks, allocates, and directly manages the laboratory’s operating budget, manages contracts.
Duty: Quality Assurance, Quality Control and Accreditation Activities:
* Responsible for maintaining overall laboratory data quality and accreditation status through adherence to all requirements.

* Must be a resident of the state of Colorado at the time of application.

Minimum Qualification:
Experience Only:
* Ten (10) years of relevant laboratory experience to include
o Five (5) years of ISO/IEC 17025:2017 accreditation experience
o One (1) years supervisory experience with technical lab staff / laboratory management.
OR
Education and Experience:
* A combination of related education and/or relevant experience in an occupation related to laboratory work equal to ten (10) years to include
o Five (5) years of ISO/IEC 17025:2017 accreditation experience
o One (1) years supervisory experience with technical lab staff / laboratory management.
Preferred Qualifications:
* Four (4) years experience in the supervision of laboratory staff and management of a physical laboratory operation.
Required Competencies (Knowledge, Skills and Abilities):
* Excellent interpersonal, communication and public speaking skills.
* Knowledge of supervisory experience with laboratory staff.
* Project management skills: ability to multitask, problem-solve, prioritize, create systems and processes and collaborate with and engage others.
* Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and juggle multiple priorities.
* Knowledge of good laboratory practices related to regulatory quality requirements.
* Detail oriented.
* Ability to write detail-oriented reports based on analysis.
* Excellent communication skills; able to communicate effectively and articulately in writing and orally with diverse communities.
* Work well under pressure.
* Strong relationship management skills and excellent representation of the department in community interactions.
