The Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (DAFM) is a multi-functional organisation which provides a wide range of services both directly and through specialist state agencies operating under its aegis. The Department has a wide and diverse customer base which includes farmers, consumers, food processors and other commercial operators, those involved in sea fishing, forestry, bio-energy, research as well as diverse EU institutions, other State Bodies and special interest groups. The Mission of the Department is to serve ‘the government and people of Ireland by leading, developing and regulating the agri-food sector, protecting public health and optimising social, economic and environmental benefits.’
The Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine is responsible for ensuring the development of Forestry within Ireland in a manner and to a scale that maximises its contribution to national socio-economic well-being on a sustainable basis that is compatible with the protection of the environment. The Department is responsible for the licensing of forestry-related activities, including afforestation, felling, roading of the forest estate and the provision of grant-aid to assist in these activities for the private forestry sector.
The role is to provide engineering support to the Department, to enable the planting of forests and access to and mobilisation of timber from the national forest estate. In this role, the successful candidate will support delivery of Forest Road Schemes, undertake site inspections and reports, review and examine licence applications and provide general engineering advice to the Department.
The principal duties of the Engineer Grade III include:
* Provision of engineering support and assistance to the Forestry Inspectorate.
* Processing, review and quality control of applications under the Innovative Forestry Technology Scheme, special construction works and forest road applications.
* Review of County Council referral responses, engineering specifications, special construction works proposals and other technical materials associated with forest road applications.
* Liaison with County Councils and other bodies in relation to forest roads and other related activities.
* Maintain a tracking system for forest roads.
* Preparation and delivery of internal and external training courses.
* Provision of engineering support in relation to policy and schemes development.
* Updating of documents in relation to roads and related areas.
* Other duties appropriate to the grade, including other engineering work that may arise within the wider Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine.
Essential Requirements
Candidates must, on or before the closing date of 25th April 2025:
* Hold a minimum Level 8 qualification on the National Framework of Qualification in Civil Engineering, Forest Engineering, or Agricultural Engineering, Engineers Ireland accredited.
* Or a qualification which would be acceptable to the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine as being at least equivalent for the purpose of this competition.
And have:
* A positive approach to problem solving.
* Very good interpersonal and communication skills.
* The ability to work under pressure and to meet deadlines.
* The ability to supervise staff.
* Possess a current full clean driving licence (Category B) and/or access to a car.
