POSITION: HISTORICAL TRADES INTERPRETER – GARRISON BAKER (student)
HOURS OF WORK: Variable to a maximum of 36.25 hours per week (must be able to work weekends, evenings and holidays as required)

SALARY: $17.40 per hour
PERIOD OF EMPLOYMENT: May 6 to September 1, 2024
WHAT CAN I EXPECT TO DO IN THIS ROLE?
You Will:
1. Be a representative of one of Kingston’s premium and internationally recognized tourism sites.
2. Interpret the life, work, skills and activities of a 19th century male baker in service in the British Army in garrison at Fort Henry in 1867.
3. Produce baked goods for retail sale and provide operational support for the bakery.
4. Interpret garrison life and features of a military garrison as represented by Fort Henry.
5. Support Fort Henry programming and customer service initiatives.
6. Ensure the safety of visitors and staff and protect the resources of the site.
7. Work safely at all times and report unsafe activities immediately to your supervisor.
8. Embody the SLPC’s equity, diversity and inclusion principles while interacting with staff and guests.
HOW DO I QUALIFY?
You Have The Following Skills:
PHYSICAL SKILLS:
1. The ability to learn to operate Fort Henry’s historic ovens to produce baked goods.
2. A high degree of physical fitness to meet the physical demands of the position.
3. The ability to make bread by hand using nineteenth century methods.
Acting & Performance Skills:
1. The ability to learn historical information, particularly Canadian and/or British military and social history c. 1867, within a limited timeframe and interpret it to the public (in both individual and group settings).
2. The ability to portray an historical character by wearing a historical costume and performing the role in public.
3. Communication and interpersonal skills to provide excellent program delivery, customer service and effective information service to both staff and the public.
Safety Skills:
1. The ability to learn all safety protocols and procedures to ensure personal, guest and fellow staff safety is always maintained.
2. The ability to follow all safe food handling procedures.
Student Status: You must be enrolled in a secondary or post-secondary institution (currently or for the fall semester) OR you must have graduated within the past six months (for example, if you graduated in December, you can apply for and start a summer student position up until June of the following year).
