Laboratory Aide - UPMC Whitfield Location: UPMC Whitfield Hospital Job type: Permanent Overview of role: To provide administrative support and carry out assigned laboratory duties, tests and checks as appropriate.
To perform appropriate assigned tasks under supervision using established procedures for which training will be provided Primary Duties and Responsibilities: Receive specimens into the laboratory, sort, label and identify and separate specimens received.
To ensure the correct data entry of patient and specimen requests onto the laboratory computer system.
Verify that samples adhere to the minimum acceptance criteria.
To be able to identify anomalies including incorrectly labelled and mislaid specimens in accordance with the laboratory policies and procedures.
Report incidents and near misses as appropriate.
To prioritise urgent samples and inform the appropriate Medical Scientist.
Responsible for the preparation of packaged samples referred to other laboratories.
Tracking of specimens sent to referral laboratories, ensuring receipt of reports and delivery to clinicians.
Following up of outstanding reports from referral laboratories.
Place orders.
Receive and disseminate Goods Inwards.
Safely process and dispose of waste material from the laboratory.
Keep work areas tidy and clean shelves, bench tops and sinks.
To participate in the Laboratory Quality Management System in accordance with both the Laboratory Quality Manual and the Laboratory User Manual.
Attend lab staff meetings and participate in discussions.
Other duties may be required from time to time by the laboratory manager.
To adopt a flexible approach to the role and to carry out any administration duties as are necessary for the post.
Qualifications & Experience: Two years' experience in a similar role.
Experience working in a healthcare setting or laboratory setting.
Business / Secretarial qualification.
