Cartoon Saloon, established in 1999 by Paul Young, Tomm Moore, and Nora Twomey, is a world renowned animation studio with five Academy Award® and two Golden Globe® nominations and many award wins including BAFTA® and Emmy®. Located in Kilkenny, Ireland, the studio produces brave and beautiful shorts, feature films, and TV series. Cartoon Saloon is the founder and host of Kilkenny Animated, an annual festival of visual storytelling incorporating exhibitions, talks and performances celebrating the creativity of the animation craft.
Following the Director’s vision and under the guidance of the Art Director (s) and Layout Supervisor, the Layout Artist’s primary responsibility is to use the animatic to generate scenes that facilitate and optimise the storytelling. Finalising location design while indicating character, props and effects placement within the shot, the layout artist must be able to illustrate how scene composition, camera lens/angle, movement and editing choices are put to use to best serve the narrative.
As a Layout Artist you will be responsible for:
* Following the animatic, work closely with the director to establish visual language as relates to shot set up, composition, lens choice and camera movement
* Generate PSDs for each shot assigned to you, based on storyboard panels and supervisor’s briefing.
* Check hook-ups, size relations, staging, reuses etc based on the storyboard and scene illustrations/reference CS provide.
* Follow briefing and notes/changes from Layout Supervisor and complete them in a timely manner
* Ensure quality and style consistency with the film
* Refine the design of the shots based on reference provided
* To deliver technically clearly named and well layered files to the scene prep and background departments following established protocols
* Possible Layout and Background reuses must be indicated (full/partial reuse)
* Make sure that camera moves, light direction, wind direction and shadows are indicated when needed
* Follow exact procedures set by CS
* Follow guidelines and meet deadlines as established by production
* Address any problems and communicate progress of work to the Layout Supervisor, Production Manager and Production Coordinator
* The ideal candidate should have at least 2 years experience as a Layout Artist theatrically distributed 2D features and/or aired television series.
* Strong artistic skills with an aesthetic for perspective, scale and composition
* Excellent problem solving skills
* Ability to meet deadlines as established by production management
* Ability to multitask and prioritise
* Excellent organisational and communication skills
* Strong attention to detail
* Promote a good work ethic and positive atmosphere within the team
* Assist in keeping information related to the project confidential and secure
* Attend and contribute to relevant meetings and trainings as needed
* Knowledge of asset tracking and database software (such as Shotgrid) is a distinct advantage
* Be available on Google Chat and by emails during working hours
