Overview
Senior Speech and Language Therapist - ENT/Oncology Role Summary:
This senior speech and language therapist position involves the management and development of the SLT service for patients with communication and swallowing difficulties related to ENT and oncology conditions.
The successful candidate will work closely with inpatient and outpatient teams, including those post laryngectomy, and be an integral part of the multi-speciality Beaumont Hospital SLT team.
Responsibilities
* Provide comprehensive clinical services to patients attending Beaumont Hospital for ENT head and neck oncology services, including assessment and rehabilitation for communication and swallowing disorders.
* Collaborate with other senior SLTs across various specialties to ensure a seamless and comprehensive service for patients with cancer.
* Maintain close liaison with relevant personnel regarding patient care and management.
* Develop and maintain expertise in managing individuals living with long-term illness and disability, ensuring professional standards are upheld.
* Participate in the practice education of SLT students and provide SLT services as required.
* Promote and develop links with local services as necessary.
Managerial Responsibilities
* Operational management of the speech and language therapy service in the designated area.
* Supervision of SLT staff assigned to the area or within the wider SLT department.
* Participation in service planning and development to meet patient needs, including policy and procedure development.
* Quality improvement initiatives, including short- and long-term objectives.
* Liaison with statutory, voluntary, and external agencies as appropriate.
* Deputising for the SLT Manager as needed.
Educational Responsibilities
* Mentorship and supervision of staff grade SLTs and/or SLT Assistants.
* Clinical supervision of SLT students in conjunction with other SLTs.
* Education and training on safe swallowing practices and accessible environments for individuals with communication disabilities.
* Continuous professional development to meet registration body standards.
Administrative Responsibilities
* Maintenance of patient records within HSE and departmental standards.
* Attendance at staff and other relevant meetings.
Qualifications
Selection Criteria: The following qualifications, skills, knowledge, and experience are required for this role:
* Mandatory:
o Statutory Registration as a Speech & Language Therapist by CORU.
o 3 years full-time post-qualification clinical experience.
o Requisite knowledge and ability for the proper discharge of duties.
o Annual registration on the Speech & Language Therapists Register maintained by CORU.
o Good character and state of health.
* Desirable:
o Experience relevant to the clinical area.
o Membership of the Irish Association of Speech and Language Therapists.
o Competency in tracheostomy care, laryngectomy care, and instrumental swallowing assessment.
o Knowledge of the Irish healthcare system.
