The Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) role in Community Infectious Diseases (ID) encompasses comprehensive management of blood-borne viruses, including HIV and hepatitis, as well as sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and the management of other conditions requiring ID input.
This position is essential for ensuring the highest standards of care for patients requiring management of these conditions.
The CNS will actively identify individuals not accessing care through rapid testing and provide peer support to facilitate their engagement in treatment.
Additionally, the role involves developing nurse liaison links to enhance testing and linkage to care for high-risk groups, such as the homeless, prisoners, and people who inject drugs.
Acting as a clinical resource, the CNS will provide specialised advice, education, and support to healthcare professionals and patients, promoting health literacy and treatment adherence.
This integrated approach aims to foster collaboration between acute and primary care providers, ultimately increasing access to treatment and reducing the need for acute inpatient care at The Mater Hospital.
