Position Description
ESB is seeking to recruit a solicitor to join the Property, Planning & Environment and Employment Law (PPEEL) team. This team forms part of the wider in-house legal team in ESB which provides legal expertise and advises on all property, planning & environment and employment law issues affecting ESB’s business and ESB Strategy.
The successful candidate will have responsibility for legal advice regarding a varied range of property development and environmental issues across ESB’s Group.
Key Responsibilities
1. Responsible for the management of their own caseload while working closely and proactively with the senior solicitor for the area, internal clients including senior managers.
2. Reviewing, drafting, negotiating, and advising on multifaceted transactions including environmental property issues.
3. Handling contentious matters and negotiations regarding ESB infrastructure including briefing Counsel as required.
4. Applying knowledge and understanding of ESB’s businesses and operational requirements.
5. Applying professional values and sound judgement with strong awareness of laws relevant to development of land, demonstrating familiarity with ESB’s legislative, regulatory, and corporate governance frameworks.
6. Proactively liaising with other specialist areas within ESB including other specialist legal advisers within the legal department as required.
7. Running planning hearings and providing support in planning and environmental litigation, briefing, and attending Counsel and when appropriate engaging with external law firms appointed by ESB and advising on the best approach to cases.
8. Working as part of the legal team and embedding with the internal client team on specific projects from time to time.
9. Managing and working collaboratively with external solicitor firms and barristers from ESB’s panel and engaging with the legal teams of JV partners.
10. Drafting advice and policy and reviewing existing policies.
11. Providing specialist briefings to ESB client teams.
Experience and Qualifications
1. Qualified as a solicitor/barrister with 5 years post qualification experience in complex infrastructural and property development issues in Ireland.
2. Proven track record of reviewing complex environmental reports, submissions and legislation and drafting advice.
3. Excellent research, technical and drafting skills.
4. Strong work ethic, self-motivated and solutions driven.
5. Ability to work effectively under pressure and delivering high quality advice while working to tight timelines.
6. Initiative and ability to work independently and prioritise issues while working as part of the legal team and client teams.
7. Sound commercial judgement, strong analytical skills, and a proven ability to provide practical advice in a commercial context.
8. Strong Stakeholder Management, interpersonal and communication skills with track record of building relationships with clients and colleagues and the ability to influence and engage with clients and colleagues.
9. Proficient in MS Office package and legal case management systems.
10. Infrastructure and property development experience in Northern Ireland and the UK.
11. Experience in commercial property conveyancing including dealing with Brownfield Sites and contaminated land transactions.

This position will be based in ESB Head Office, Lower Fitzwilliam Street, Dublin 2.
