**Job Title:** Basic Grade Medical Scientist - Biochemistry
**Department:** Laboratory
**Reports to:** Chief Medical Scientist/Laboratory Manager
The successful candidate will assist in the routine processing and coordination of the Laboratory service, ensuring alignment with the hospital's mission, values, vision, and strategic plan.
This role requires the ability to work across multiple laboratory disciplines, performing tests competently, and being responsible for processing and authorizing under the direction of the Chief Medical Scientist and Laboratory Manager.
**Responsibilities and Deliverables:**
* Assist in developing, maintaining, and enforcing procedures related to all areas of the laboratory and its equipment.
* Apply and implement operational procedures up to best practice standards to optimize resource use.
* Implement a quality management program that prioritizes patient-centered care, measuring and auditing performance, and client satisfaction.
**Service Delivery:**
* Perform scientific work to meet JCI Accreditation Standards, as determined by the Chief Medical Scientist and Laboratory Manager.
* Ensure compliance with INAB Accreditation standards and EU Directive on Blood/Blood Products, if working in an INAB accredited laboratory discipline.
* Prioritize and organize work during busy periods, coordinating multiple concurrent testing.
* Participate in the Departmental 'on call' rota, as required.
* Collaborate with relevant staff on new ideas and technologies, adhering to hospital policies.
* Participate in registering and storing laboratory stocks, in accordance with policy.
* Record details concerning mishaps, complaints, and defects in supplies and equipment, investigate circumstances, and report findings to laboratory management.
* Facilitate and participate in evaluating drugs, equipment, consumable items, and research projects with medical and scientific staff.
* Engage in professional development through self-learning and formal courses or on-the-job training.
**Staff Management:**
* Participate in training the laboratory team.
* Demonstrate professionalism, punctuality, and dedication as a member of the laboratory team, promoting open communication.
* Communicate clearly and courteously to members of the laboratory team and hospital clients.
**Health and Safety:**
* Contribute to implementing effective safety procedures to comply with the Safety, Health, and Welfare at Work Act within hospital policy.
* Assist and cooperate with the laboratory Management Team in developing procedures to prevent and manage accidents in the Laboratory area.
**Quality:**
* Participate in implementing quality management programs.
* Actively participate in internal and external quality control and assurance programs.
* Ensure adherence to professional codes and guidelines, including Quality Assurance standards.
**Information Technology:**
* Participate in developing the laboratory information system for the department.
* Facilitate data collection, interpretation, and presentation for Department activity, staffing, and expenditure according to hospital reporting needs.
**Review:**
* The achievement of laboratory and personal objectives is facilitated by regular review.
* Participate in the review process as outlined by the Laboratory Management team.
* Any other duties deemed appropriate to the post.
**Flexibility:**
* This post requires a high level of flexibility to ensure the delivery of an effective and efficient service. Therefore, the post holder will be required to demonstrate flexibility as and when required by their manager.
