As a Senior Network Reliability Engineer, you will be responsible for:
1. Taking an analytical approach to ensuring services are running smoothly: identifying and regularly reviewing operational health indicators and taking action to ensure services are delivered to defined service levels.
2. Continuously analyzing service data to identify and execute upon service improvement opportunities. Opportunities will be assessed on their potential to remove manual effort (‘toil’), improve service reliability, and enhance customer experience.
3. Developing, or partnering with other teams to develop automation that will remove toil from the environment, and deliver a more reliable, cost-effective service to the company.
4. Applying SRE (Site Reliability Engineering) principles for all technologies supported by Network Operations, including LAN, WAN, Wireless, DDI, Security, and IP Telephony.
Role Responsibilities
1. Assume a technical leadership role on major outages or planned events that impact the services in question. Collaborate with the Command Center to ensure processes are optimized for management of critical incidents including escalation matrices, troubleshooting plans and impact statements.
2. Embed core principles and practices of Site Reliability Engineering in the delivery of network services.
3. Ensure services are meeting the quality and reliability outcomes expected by customers: identify and regularly review health indicators, taking actions as required.
4. Drive a Predictive Operations focus at Network Operations, identifying and taking action to mitigate potential outages before they become business interruptions.
5. Continuously analyze service data to identify improvement opportunities, maintaining a backlog of prioritized opportunities.
6. Apply core principles of Chaos engineering where appropriate to improve network reliability.
7. Analyse network capacity and performance trends to anticipate future needs and ensure the network can handle growth.
8. Lead automation efforts for the services in question, developing automation code to agreed standards.
9. Collaborate closely with Product Owners for Network products, understanding roadmaps and evaluating automation opportunities.
10. Develop and maintain monitoring artefacts for proactive service monitoring, partnering closely with Command Center.
11. Lead post-mortems for major events, ensuring learnings from service failures are identified and action plans developed and executed upon.
Basic Qualifications
1. Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Information technology or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
2. 5+ years of relevant experience in enterprise network operations settings.
3. Proficiency in networking protocols such as TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, BGP, and others.
4. Keen data literacy, skilled at aggregating multiple data sources to drive insights and actions.
5. Understanding of network security principles and practices, including firewalls, VPN, IPS, and encryption.
6. Strong technical aptitudes, with demonstrated experience in network technologies outlined above.
7. Proven ability to build and improve processes and workflows, with a focus on removing toil through process re-design and automation.
8. Embraces accountability and exhibits an ownership demeanor.
9. Exposure to agile ways of working and the ability to be effective in such a paradigm.
10. Poise in high-pressure situations, with a track record of effectively dealing with major outages.
11. Communicates in a succinct, accurate and timely fashion.
Preferred Qualifications
1. Understanding of software development concepts and coding concepts (python, Java) is preferred.
2. Network vendor certifications (e.g., Cisco, Palo Alto, Arista, Riverbed).
3. Understanding of and experience in network monitoring tools.
