Position Description
The Transmission and Distribution Engineering (TDE) business, part of Engineering and Major Projects, is the centre of engineering for ESB’s Transmission & Distribution businesses. The Power System Studies (PSS) teams in the Network System Services (NSS) Group are a key part of TDE. They consist of a dedicated group of engineers and consultants who provide specialised power system modelling and analysis services to clients in Ireland and overseas. These services typically involve computer modelling and simulation of various aspects of electrical power systems.
The main services provided by PSS Teams include:
1. Protection relay setting services for utility and industrial clients in Ireland and abroad.
2. Development of practical solutions for clients based on power system analysis (power flow, short-circuit, transient stability, electromagnetic transients, power quality studies, etc.).
3. Substation earth grid design and testing services for a range of utility and industrial clients.
The role of the power system studies engineer is to manage and carry out a range of technical power system studies, and assist with training, development and innovation. We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Junior Protection Engineer to join our dynamic team. The successful candidate will play a crucial role in providing protection settings and maintaining protection systems to ensure the safety and reliability of our electrical power systems. This is an excellent opportunity for a recent graduate or early-career professional to develop their skills and grow within a supportive and innovative environment.
Key Responsibilities
Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:
1. Carrying out and documenting technical studies such as protection relay settings, power flow, short-circuit, transient stability studies and other technical studies.
2. Understanding the technical, commercial, and financial nature of power system studies projects and managing coordination with internal and external stakeholders.
3. Meeting requirements for project safety, quality, program and budget, and monitoring projects from the initial contact through to final delivery.
4. Flexibility is important in all aspects of the role, including travel nationally and internationally.

5. Proven track record of project management/co-ordination, delivering projects on time and to the highest technical standards.

7. Ability to make quality decisions and judgement, with a logical, yet imaginative and innovative approach to problem solving.
8. Willingness to learn and adapt to new technologies and methodologies.
It is desirable that the candidate has achieved the following:
1. Experience with specialised power system studies software packages such as: PSS/E, PSSSINCAL, PowerFactory, CAPE / GRIDSCALE X, CDEGS.
2. Previous internship or work experience in the electrical power industry.
3. Familiarity with protection relay settings and coordination.
4. Knowledge of industry standards and regulations related to electrical protection.
5. Knowledge of low carbon technologies.
6. Published Technical Papers at reputable international conferences.
7. Active involvement in international engineering organisations such as CIGRÉ, CIRED, IEEE and IET (e.g. participation in Working Groups).
8. Chartered Engineer status.
Qualifications
1. Either level 8 in Electrical Engineering or equivalent work experience is essential.
Location
This role is based in either E&MP Dublin/ Cork offices but travel to project locations both nationally and internationally as required is a key requirement of the role.

Reporting to one of the Power System Studies Team Leaders, Network System Services, Transmission & Distribution Engineering.
A reserve list will be held for 6 months in which you will be placed if you are suitable for the role.
