Long Island University is a national teaching and research institution with an R2 Carnegie Classification. The Director for Sponsored Projects is responsible for managing the operations of the Office of Sponsored Projects (OSP), covering pre- and post-award activities and ensuring compliance with federal and other pertinent regulations related to sponsored research and grant awards. As the University's authorized organizational representative (AOR), the Director is tasked with maintaining current and comprehensive policies and procedures within OSP to facilitate efficient administration of sponsored projects.
The OSP is a pivotal entity essential for advancing Long Island University's research objectives. The ideal candidate will work with and maintain collaborative relationships with Academic Affairs, colleges, business and finance departments, as well as other campus units. By fostering collaboration across these areas, the OSP can establish a strong foundation to facilitate and enhance the growth of sponsored project awards at Long Island University.
Primary Role and Responsibilities
* Supports Vice President for Research in managing and delivering the University’s sponsored research agenda in alignment with the LIU Strategic Plan.
* Serves as the AOR (Authorized Organizational Representative) for LIU.
* Prepares analyses and projections for all aspects of pre-award grant administration.
* Manages reporting, regulatory, and fiduciary responsibilities associated with each funding agency.
* Manages and oversees pre- post-award and accounting for sponsored projects, including initial exploration for potential grant opportunities; creation of timelines; identification of resources; proposal and report; dealing with sponsors; ensuring efficient applications/submissions; initiate and complete award transfers, amendments and other contractual administration from funding agencies.
* Hires, supervises, trains, and evaluates staff in the Office of Sponsored Projects.
* Represents the University in negotiation of resulting grants, contracts, and agreements; collaborates with outside agencies and organizations for grant development and implementation; and networks with internal and external grant stakeholders, as well as other grant development professionals.
* Provides direction for interpretation of Uniform Guidance, OMB and Code of Federal Regulations for sponsored awards.
* Develops reports and responds to inquiries, troubleshoots and keeps records including data, analysis and compilation for sponsor guidelines, national surveys.
* Participates in various committees and provides advisory support to the Contract Research Organization and senior leadership on matters critical to sponsored projects administration.
* Interprets and applies University policies and procedures regarding sponsored projects.
* Identifies potential threats to sponsored projects administration and oversees compliance and regulatory frameworks, risk management related to sponsored projects.
* Stays current in relation to changing grant standards and proposal guidelines and communicates relevant information to stakeholders (PIs, Co-PIs, etc.)
* Develops procedures to encourage and assist grant proposal submission. Oversees OSP departmental budget.
* Develops and implements programs, such as communication and training initiatives for principal investigators, to enhance LIU's competitiveness in securing and successfully executing sponsored awards.
Qualifications and Requirements
* Master’s degree in related field required; Advanced degree preferred.
* Certification demonstrating competence in sponsored programs, and or research administration is preferred.
* An understanding of Grant development services, proposal guidelines and standards.
* Five years research sponsored project administration (pre-post and closeout) experience with federal funding including supervisory experience is required.
* 10 years research and sponsored project administration with federal, state and other sponsored projects and contracts administration is preferred.
* Research administration, NCURA or SRA certifications, or CPA, preferred.
* Senior level management experience in higher education.
