Post Summary: The Senior Technical Officer will play a key role in ensuring the effective and efficient delivery of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching programs, experimental project work (Capstone, MSc, PhD level) and research activities in the Discipline of Physiology.
They will provide vital technical and training support to a variety of areas of research and teaching activities throughout the Discipline.
This is a permanent full-time on-site post.
Context The Discipline of Physiology provides high quality teaching to students of Science and the Health Sciences.
We are a very research active Discipline, with a particular focus on exercise physiology, cell physiology and neuroscience.
Our laboratories are equipped with state-of-the-art facilities for each of the relevant research areas.
In addition, we have access to core research facilities including flow cytometry, confocal imaging, and a well-equipped behavioural suite.
The successful candidate will join a team of Technical Staff working in the preparation, delivery and development of practical laboratory activities and research support in Discipline of Physiology across laboratories located in the Trinity Institute of Biomedical Sciences, Watts Building and the Trinity College Institute of Neuroscience.
Reporting to the Chief Technical Officer 1, the Senior Technical Officer will be required to liaise directly with academics, researchers, and students to provide technical support and advice.
The ideal candidate will have relevant hands-on experience in a similar academic or commercial laboratory environment, will have highly developed administrative and communication skills, will be motivated and flexible in their approach to work and will be committed to supporting quality in higher education.
They will have relevant molecular biology and tissue culture experience in an academic or similar environment, including western blotting, ELISA, gel electrophoresis, histology and immunohistochemistry, cell culture, PCR/qPCR, RNA isolation, microscopy and confocal imaging.
They will play an important role in the support of physiology skills education and related theoretical instruction as required.
A key requirement will be the development and maintenance of the Physiology laboratories including keeping up to date with best practice both nationally and internationally.
Main Responsibilities Under the general direction of the Chief Technical Officer 1, the Senior Technical Officer will: Prepare laboratories for physiology practical activities for day-to-day teaching as required to support the Discipline's programmes.
Use Lt, a cloud based online learning platform, to deliver the Discipline's teaching programmes.
Assist academic staff in the design, development, and delivery of physiology laboratory classes and participate in forward planning activities.
Contribute to the development of student practical handbooks.
Assist with outreach programs organised within the Discipline.
Participate in supervision of early career technical staff on a day-to-day basis, as required.
Assist in the development/training of demonstrators and mentoring early career staff.
Maintenance, ordering and storing of equipment and resources for the Discipline.
Assist with stock inventories and control of purchasing and deliveries within the Discipline.
Provide training and technical support to undergraduates, postgraduates, demonstrators, and research staff in a variety of physiological techniques and instrumentation such as western blotting, ELISA, gel electrophoresis, histology and immunohistochemistry, cell culture, PCR/qPCR, RNA isolation, microscopy and confocal imaging Be responsible for equipment used in both research and teaching activities, including installation, operation, testing and preventative maintenance of, water purification systems, balances, hot plates, heating mantels, water baths, ovens, biosafety cabinets, incubators, microscopes, centrifuges, pH-meter, UV-VIS and IR spectrophotometers, plate readers, gel/membrane imaging systems, etc.
Assist with compressed gas cylinder changes, carry out routine cylinder regulator and connections to instruments safety checks and maintain relevant logs.
Assist with the preparation of health and safety documents (risk assessments and SOPs), in monitoring compliance with health and safety rules and regulations, Discipline procedures, and managing the disposal of biological, chemical, and other waste.
Perform general administrative responsibilities associated to the role, including health and safety, budget control, purchasing, etc.
Ensure the teaching laboratories, materials and equipment are kept tidy and in good working order and maintain good laboratory records and reports.
Display a commitment to continuous professional and technical development, including taking on associated responsibilities and lead others in the adaptation to new technologies.
Demonstrate a flexible approach to delivering team results and proactively provide support and assistance to other members of the team.
Liaise with College services (IT, E&F, HazMat, etc), other College Schools and Departments, external bodies and service suppliers.
Support the implementation of University and School policies.
Undertake necessary training as determined by the Chief Technical Officer 1.
Such other duties as are required in general conformity with those traditionally performed by Senior Technical Officer staff.
Post status: Permanent Hours of Post: 36.5 hours per week Salary: This appointment will be made on the Senior Technical Officer Salary Scale (€59,921 - €71,989 per annum).
