Head of Operations ( General Manager) Cork University Maternity Hospital
The Maternity Services Directorate delivers services at four hospitals, University Hospital Kerry, Cork University Maternity Hospital, South Tipperary General Hospital and University Hospital Waterford.
There are four Maternity Units in the HSE S/SWHG – University Hospital Waterford, University Hospital Kerry, Cork University Maternity Hospital and South Tipperary General Hospital - spanning four of the largest counties in the country.
Maternity Services includes Neonatology and Gynaecology as well as Midwifery and Obstetrics.
One fifth of all babies born in the Republic of Ireland are born in the Maternity Directorate of the SSWHG Group.
In 2017 a total of 11,354 mothers delivered 11,577 babies across the four maternity units, which translates to an average of 32 babies born per day across the group.
Admissions to the Neonatal Units within the Region include many of the most demanding cases.
Under new national standards, neonates at 28 weeks or less must be transferred to a regional centre.
This inevitably puts more pressure on the neonatology unit at CUMH and increases the necessity for rapid and effective cooperation between the neonatal units within the Group.
There are also an increasing number of patients attending our Emergency Rooms and our Gynaecological Services at the four Maternity Units.
The South West Region is in transition to an Integrated Health System and from 3rd March 2025 it is envisaged that an Integrated Healthcare Area Manager structure will be in place.
The Primary Academic partner is University College Cork (UCC), which offers a wide range of educational programmes and conducts research within all the hospitals in the Region.
A Regional Executive Management Team oversees the collective executive functioning of the South West Region.
