Main Purpose of Role
The role is part of the R&D team responsible for the delivery of all new products to the business, and for the continuous improvement of products, processes, and people.
Activities are against the requirements of the New Product Introduction (NPI) and the Value Improvement (VI) processes, the company operating procedures, and European and UK regulatory standards.
The Design Engineer is required to participate in all design related engineering/technical activity in the team in the delivery of the NPI project programme and the development of the competence centre within R&D.
Design Engineers are responsible for approaching delivering all activity meaningfully, using their expertise and knowledge and always striving for a best-in-class approach.
The Design Engineer will support the development of a positive and outward looking culture which is performance driven, respected and results focused.
Key Accountabilities Undertake mechanical design activities related to the product lifecycle management of all products and solutions in the portfolio.Maintain a sound theoretical approach to design technology and demonstrate practical application of engineering knowledge in planning and specifying activities and problem solving/solution evaluation.Promote innovation and advancement in technology and participate in, or specify research, in design.Complete activities in full, to time and cost to meet the requirements of the programme.Knowledge and understanding of design principles, materials selection and optimisation, supplier design capability assessment, 3D modelling and 'material master' design BOM product lifecycle management.Contribution to continuous improvement, ensuring ongoing review of technology, processes and outcomes and implementation of new initiatives.Collaboration with third party design and design for manufacture expertise / contracts as required to meet NPI and VI process programmes.Ongoing continuous professional development of own competencies and skills to meet programme requirements.Communication of information and knowledge to support effective decision making.Develop and maintain constructive relationships with colleagues.Undertake supplier liaison against the requirements of the vendor management process.Build understanding of customers and markets and work with others to improve customer service.Dimensions and Complexity Manage complex challenges in delivery and prioritisation and delivering the time cost specification and quality of NPI activities.Key internal relationships: R&D; product management, training, production engineering, quality, procurement, planning and supply chain, service.Key external relationships: suppliers, third party consultants, customers.Measures Adherence to process.Delivery of NPI, value improvement and innovation programmes to meet activity requirements in line with the agreed project time, cost, and specification targets.Warranty reduction, quality, and value improvement to meet business targets.Culture and Engagement, feedback from outside the function.Skills, Knowledge and Experience Essential Criteria Knowledge and understanding of engineering principles in relevant technology and competence centre fields to fulfil the requirement of the role.Strong background in product design and development and / or continuous improvement in a technical/engineering/manufacturing discipline.Awareness of effective planning and implementation of design activity.Strong analytical and critical reasoning skills, and implementation of solutions.Team player with excellent communication and networking skills with strong drive, initiative, and self-motivation.Ability to balance competing priorities and drive issues to completion.Awareness of markets and customers.Specific detailed experience in several of the following areas is required: materials selection, sheet metal design, complex plastic and composite moulding part and tool design, design for manufacture and assembly, heating systems, smart controls, thermodynamic and hydronic circuit design and control, quality management systems and processes.Excellent technical experience and advanced knowledge of own or professional discipline, and a working knowledge of other disciplines.Competencies and Qualifications Degree and/or professional qualification in relevant technical/engineering discipline or substantial hands-on operational experience in Mechanical Design R&D/Engineering environment.Experience Significant and relevant post qualification/after degree experience in a wide range of engineering and new product design and introduction roles (minimum 3 years).Training CAD/PLM/PDM/CAEBasic Project Management trainingNPI and VI process trainingProduct trainingHealth & safety trainingRegulation and standards trainingMarket and customer awareness trainingGlen Dimplex Values
