Basic Function:
Teagasc are seeking to appoint a highly qualified and enthusiastic Research Technologist to manage and plan for the strategic development of the feed and animal physiology laboratories at the Animal and Grassland Research and Innovation Centre, Grange. In addition to supporting the research programme, the candidate will be expected to develop and implement new analytical techniques and to contribute to the writing of research proposals and grant applications.
Background:
Grange is part of the Animal & Grassland Research and Innovation Centre in Teagasc and has extensive facilities for field and laboratory research. Teagasc has an international reputation for researching and developing grass-based systems of livestock production and this candidate will work with a dynamic team of Teagasc researchers and specialists across Teagasc’s Animal & Grassland Research and Innovation Programme at Grange, Athenry and Moorepark.
Job Objectives
* Manage the animal feed and animal physiology laboratories on a day to day basis and provide strategic advice to the Enterprise Leader on their development.
* Work closely with existing laboratory technologists and technicians, researchers, post-doctoral fellows and post-graduate students assigned to individual research projects.
* Manage laboratory inventory, establish preventative maintenance schedules for equipment; overseeing computerized recording systems such as LIMS.
* Provide technical support for an array of existing laboratory assays largely dealing with fresh and ensiled forage, concentrate feed and animal tissue samples.
* Collect and process biological samples and conduct laboratory analysis.
* Record all experimental information accurately, carefully and orderly as prescribed in the experimental protocol making optimal use of automated recording systems.
* Stay abreast of new techniques and tests, new procedures, new technologies in animal and feed analysis, and contribute to their development and incorporation into the Teagasc programme where appropriate.
* Contribute to writing of scientific papers and research grant proposals as requested.
* Remain up to date on new technologies, instrumentation and innovative practices in laboratory processes and procedures.
* Assist in the training and supervision of Walsh Scholars, post-doctoral and contract researchers and colleagues as required in feed and animal physiology measurements and experimental techniques.
* To assist Teagasc in meeting the commitments of the Quality Customer Service Charter and Action Plan.
* To actively participate in the annual business planning and Performance Management Development System (PMDS) processes.
* Fully co-operate with the provisions made for ensuring the health, safety and welfare of themselves, fellow staff and non-Teagasc staff and co-operate with management in enabling Teagasc to comply with legal obligations. This includes full compliance with the responsibilities outlined in the Safety Statement.
* Any other duties as may be assigned from time to time.

* A Level 8 qualification (as recognised on the National Framework of Qualifications or equivalent), in agricultural science or a related discipline.
* A postgraduate degree would be a distinct advantage.
