Job Title: Registered General Nurse/Registered Operating Department Practitioner

Hours of work: 37.5 hours per week
Job Summary:
The post-holder will provide high quality direct patient care within the Hospital’s Theatre in a range of surgical specialties peri-operative areas. Flexible working arrangements conducive to a work/life balance. Preferably 3 years Theatre/Anaesthetic/PACU experience. Varied work as a multi-disciplinary professional in the peri-operative setting. Ongoing in-house education to ensure best practice and CPD.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Provide skilled care and demonstrate a high standard of practice in the assessment, implementation and evaluation of patient care.
2. Ensure care is delivered as per hospital policy.
3. Participate in the ‘Induction Programme’ of nursing and other clinical staff, as applicable, after appropriate training.
4. Ensure custody, administration and recording of medication are in accordance with hospital, and NMBI/HCPC guidelines.
5. Inform the Theatre Manager of any matters affecting the professional standard of patient care.
6. Participate as a scrubbed member of the Theatre team and carry out safety checks of swabs, instruments, and needles, reporting on the same to the Surgeon.
7. Act as a circulating member of the Theatre team.
8. Assist with other members of the team in the preparation and cleaning of Theatres.
9. Assist in the compilation of the Theatre register.
10. Aid the Surgeon as required.
11. Check, witness, and administer controlled and scheduled drugs under the professionals own scope of practice.
Anaesthetics/PACU:
1. Use specialist knowledge to provide individualized patient care of a physiological and psychological nature to ensure that the patient receives the highest standard of care.
2. Understand the significance of pre-operative assessment and investigations including fasting guidelines and the anaesthetic consequences of co-morbidities.
3. Understand the principle of airway management in both adult and paediatric setting.
4. Carry out routine safety checks on anaesthetic equipment in accordance with AAGBI & manufacturers checklist.
5. Prepare the anaesthetic environment, including specialist knowledge of equipment and appropriate actions required in the event of equipment failure.
6. Understand drugs and fluid therapy required, and associated equipment.
7. Understand Local, regional and general anaesthetic techniques.
8. Prepare and assemble the operating table, its appropriate attachments, and safe patient positioning.
9. Implement infection control measures as per theatre and hospital policy.
10. Replenish sterile stocks as appropriate ensuring stock rotation.
11. Maintain registration with professional body and provide proof for records.
12. Report any faults of equipment to the Theatre manager or nurse/RODP in charge of list.
13. Undertake any other duties within the scope of the post as agreed with the Theatre Manager.
14. Participate in department specific quality improvement activities within KPHS.
15. Work within their scope of practice.
16. Act immediately in contacting the Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) team if a patient requires resuscitation.
17. Use positive communication skills when interacting with patients and relatives.
Nursing Organisation:
1. Supervise the professional work of non-medical staff.
2. Support other team members in their professional work.
3. Be aware of current issues and policies within the hospital.
4. Assist the Theatre Manager with the cost-effective use of resources in patient care delivery.
Standard of Care:
1. Deliver high quality patient care that is clinically effective, evidence-based and appropriate.
2. Assess, plan, implement and evaluate care as part of a collaborative programme of patient care.
3. Ensure that correct aseptic techniques are used at all times.
4. Work alongside the multi-disciplinary team to ensure patient safety.
5. Administer medicines in accordance with NMBI guidelines and hospital policies.
6. Keep accurate and complete records consistent with regulations, policies and procedures.
7. Demonstrate an organised, effective and timely approach to all tasks.
8. Recognise when colleagues need assistance and offer practical support.
9. Work in a way that minimises risks to health, safety and security.
10. Prepare appropriately for care/intervention/treatment including risk management.
11. Manage emergencies by summoning assistance immediately when necessary.
Communication:
1. Communicate effectively within the multi-disciplinary team throughout the hospital.
2. Co-ordinate patient care and liaise effectively with other disciplines involved.
3. Maintain patient confidentiality at all times.
4. Communicate effectively with patients and relatives regarding patient care and treatment.
Health & Safety:
1. Be aware of hospital policies and practice in accordance with regulations.
2. Ensure pre-operative checks are carried out prior to commencement of any anesthetic or surgical procedure.
3. Prepare the patient psychologically and physically for any planned procedure.
4. Ensure adherence to hospital policies regarding swabs, instruments, needles etc.
5. Support others in maintaining health, safety and security.
6. Report and record any adverse events or incidents.
7. Accurately test equipment and identify any deviations from required performance standards.
8. Identify and assess potential risks involved in work activities.
9. Report any reportable incident or accidents involving staff, patients or visitors.
10. Attend annual statutory training in relevant areas.
11. Report any defective or faulty equipment to the Theatre Manager.
12. Ensure proper care and usage of equipment in the Theatre/Recovery area.
Education:
1. Assist with and participate in the in-service training programme to enhance patient care.
2. Maintain and update own professional development.
3. Supervise qualified and unqualified staff.
4. Attend annual pre-registration assessment update sessions.
5. Report on study days/courses attended to other members of theatre staff.
6. Rotate onto various shifts for professional update.
7. Share updated skills with night duty staff to improve continuity of patient care.
Management:
1. Take charge of a shift without direct supervision with appropriate training and support.
2. Participate in integrated governance and risk assessment and reporting, as required.
3. Participate in the on-call rota for the department.
Essential Criteria:
Must be a Registered Nurse with NMBI or Registered Operating Department Practitioner with the Health Care Professions Council.
Desirable Criteria:
Have at least 3 years’ experience of working in the theatre area within the last 5 years.
