The hospital has a new acute trauma ward and a 9 bed trauma rehabilitation ward, currently in development is a purpose built trauma reception unit in the emergency dept.

Currently, with 14 operating theatres, 35 Intensive care beds and 16 high dependency beds, the Mater Hospital provides one of the largest critical care services in the country.
The blood transfusion laboratory plays a pivotal role for a significant cohort of patients requiring urgent and emergency care in the acute hospital setting providing grouping and compatibility testing of blood and blood products for surgery, medical and emergency requests.
As well as the development of the MTC, The Mater Miserricordiae is home to an number of specialties; the national heart and lung transplant program, specialist centre for spinal surgery and cardiothoracic surgery (including ECLS/ECMO), National Isolation unit, specialist centre for haematology/oncology as well as serving a large population in Dublin's North inner city.
As a major teaching hospital the blood transfusion laboratory and Haemovigilance work closely with the emergency department and critical care to provide in-situ simulation for Code Red (major haemorrhage) events as part of a multidisciplinary team training.
The Blood Transfusion laboratory can provide the opportunity to develop as a medical scientist specialising in blood transfusion and promote further educational studies at Master of Science level and beyond.
