Senior Engineer – Photonic Packaging Equipment and Process Development
Contract: Full Time/Fixed Term
Role Description
The Photonics Packaging and Systems Integration Group at the Tyndall Institute invites applications for the position of Senior Engineer in Photonic Packaging Equipment and Process Development. This role focuses on advancing photonic packaging processes with a strong emphasis on automation, scaling, and supporting the group’s Pilot Line initiatives. A key responsibility is transitioning research outcomes to manufacturing, ensuring processes are both scalable and manufacturable. The successful candidate will play a central role in developing automated photonic systems capabilities, with opportunities to secure funding, build a research team, and engage strategically with stakeholders over time.
Key Responsibilities
1. Provide technical leadership in photonic packaging, with an emphasis on automation, scaling, process innovation, and transitioning research to manufacturing.
2. Design, develop, and implement advanced packaging tools and automated equipment for photonic systems.
3. Develop strategies to support the Pilot Line by bridging research and manufacturing, ensuring processes are scalable and manufacturable.
4. Manage a portfolio of technical projects and ensure timely project outcomes, with support and mentorship to develop advanced project management skills.
5. Initiate and secure new project funding, including public and private sources, as a developmental goal.
6. Build a dedicated research team over time, fostering an innovative and collaborative environment.
7. Support and mentor researchers within the group, progressively developing team-building and leadership skills.
8. Build relationships with project stakeholders, including academic and industry partners, and gain experience in fostering collaborations and managing partnerships.
9. Participate in Education and Public Engagement activities, as required.
10. Ensure compliance with organisational Quality Management Systems, Health and Safety standards, and other regulations.
11. To carry out any additional duties that may reasonably be required within the general scope and level of the post.
Essential Criteria
1. PhD qualified with typically six years academic and/or industrial experience.
2. Extensive expertise in photonic packaging processes, including laser reflow, automation and scaling, with significant accomplishments in designing and implementing innovative packaging routines and developing automated tools.
3. Proven ability to manage complex technical projects and drive impactful research, as demonstrated by successful outcomes in academic or industrial contexts.
4. Experience managing technical projects in the fields of photonics and electronics, with a willingness to develop further project leadership skills.
5. A passion for building a research team, with an openness to mentoring and leading others over time.
6. Excellent communication skills, including presenting research at conferences and industry events, with an eagerness to expand in this area.
Desirable Criteria
1. Evidence of entrepreneurial experience and creative skills/creativity.
2. Industry experience using advanced packaging equipment.
3. Industry experience developing new advanced packaging equipment.
4. Familiarity with integrated photonics and microelectronics applications, particularly in a research or industrial context.
5. Initial experience in proposal writing and securing funds from public or private sources, with an ambition to expand these skills.
6. Basic understanding of project costing, contract negotiation, and preparing project statements of work, with support available to grow in these areas.
7. Evidence of creative thinking and innovation in photonic packaging research.

Appointment may be made on the Admin Grade 6A Scale B (new entrants) salary scale €69,932 – €88,584 per annum. Salary placement on appointment will be in accordance with public sector pay policy.
