Staff Grade Speech and Language Therapist Primary Care
The Staff Grade Speech and Language Therapist will work as part of the Primary Care Team in Limerick, providing high-quality, evidence-based assessment, diagnosis, and treatment for individuals across the lifespan with communication, speech, language, and swallowing difficulties. The role will involve working with a variety of client groups, including children and adults, to support their communication and overall well-being. The successful candidate will collaborate with multidisciplinary team members and provide family-centered care within the community.
Key Responsibilities of Speech and Language Therapist
1. Conduct comprehensive assessments of speech, language, communication, and swallowing (dysphagia) difficulties in clients referred to the Primary Care SLT service.
2. Utilize standardised and non-standardised assessment tools to identify the nature and extent of communication or swallowing difficulties.
3. Provide accurate diagnoses and formulate client-centered intervention plans.
4. Deliver individualized, evidence-based interventions to address communication, speech, language, voice, fluency, and swallowing disorders.
5. Develop and implement therapy programs, both one-on-one and in groups, to facilitate progress in clients’ communication and swallowing abilities.
6. Collaborate with families, carers, and other professionals to ensure carryover of strategies and interventions in the home and community settings.
7. Work closely with other members of the Primary Care Team, including Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists, GPs, Public Health Nurses, and Social Workers, to provide holistic and integrated care.
8. Attend and contribute to multidisciplinary team meetings, case reviews, and joint assessments when needed.
9. Actively involve parents, caregivers, and families in the therapeutic process, offering guidance and education to support clients’ communication at home.
10. Provide workshops, group sessions, or educational resources to families and educators to facilitate the development of communication skills.
11. Participate in regular clinical supervision sessions with Senior SLTs, ensuring continued professional development and adherence to clinical standards.
12. Engage in reflective practice to improve clinical reasoning and enhance therapeutic outcomes.
13. Assist in supporting Speech and Language Therapy Assistants and SLT students during clinical placements, contributing to their learning and skill development.
14. Participate in teaching and mentoring activities as required by the team.
15. Maintain accurate, confidential, and timely clinical records in line with professional standards and organisational policies.
16. Ensure documentation of assessments, intervention plans, progress notes, and discharge reports complies with GDPR and data protection requirements.
17. Suggest and implement improvements to the service based on evidence and best practices.
Essential Qualifications & Experience of Speech and Language Therapist
1. A recognised qualification in Speech and Language Therapy from an accredited institution.
2. Registration with CORU (Health and Social Care Professionals Council) as a Speech and Language Therapist.
3. Experience (including student placements) in various clinical settings, ideally within primary care or community services.
4. Knowledge of assessment and intervention strategies for speech, language, communication, and swallowing disorders.
