The Ad Astra Fellowship in One Health is a prestigious opportunity for a scholar to contribute to the development of a transdisciplinary academic field across University College Dublin (UCD). The successful candidate will be based in the UCD School of History, a world-renowned centre for historical teaching and research.
About the Role
The appointee will collaborate with the School of English, Drama, and Film to develop a new area of research that examines the interconnectedness of human and animal health. This role is ideal for a scholar who is passionate about understanding the complex relationships between humans, animals, and the environment.
Key Responsibilities
* Analyse the origins of disease circuits across human and animal communities and explore their implications for contemporary disease outbreaks
* Deconstruct colonial and postcolonial power relations in contemporary understandings of diseases, environmental crises, and zoonoses
* Examine the development of pest and biological controls in the context of twentieth-century development policies and concerns over food production, safety, and security
* Centre the voices, lifeways, and experiences of colonised and/or indigenous communities and analyse their responses to medical interventions
* Make methodological contributions to ongoing discussions about uncovering new types of non-human environmental data sets and representing non-speaking subjects
About You
We are seeking a scholar who is an expert in one or more of the following areas:
* Medical history
* Medical humanities
* Environmental history
The successful candidate will have a strong track record of research and publication in these areas and a demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with colleagues from different disciplines.
What We Offer
The Ad Astra Fellowship includes a funded PhD studentship, an annual research budget, and a reduced teaching load. The successful candidate will be appointed for five years with the possibility of permanency after a four-year performance review.
