Description
The Department of Clinical Microbiology is a consultant-led service that provides a comprehensive range of laboratory tests as well as consultation in microbiology, infectious diseases, and antibiotic utilization. It also provides statistical and cumulative data for infectious disease monitoring.
Microbiology is a regional laboratory service; in addition to CUH/CUMH patients, the laboratory accepts samples from other hospitals without Microbiology laboratory facilities (e.g., St. Finbarr’s Hospital, Bantry, and Mallow General Hospitals).
In addition to diagnostic services, education and training are integral parts of the daily routine of the department, with established links to the Medical and Science Faculties at UCC and the Biological Sciences Department of MTU. The laboratory is involved in teaching both medical and biomedical science students and is engaged in collaborative research work with clinical colleagues. The department is accredited by the Royal College of Pathologists for specialist training in Clinical Microbiology.
Services offered include:
* Routine Bacteriology: Examination of urine, sputum, blood, CSF, and swabs.
* Serological testing for Hepatitis, HIV, Syphilis, and Leptospirosis.
* Molecular testing for Chlamydia trachomatis, N. gonorrhoea, enteric pathogens, and respiratory viruses performed in-house.
* Parasitology: Investigation of fecal specimens for evidence of infestation.
* Mycology: Examination of specimens such as skin scrapings and specimens from systemic infections for pathogenic fungi.
* TB Laboratory: Investigation of specimens for Mycobacterium spp.
