Job Description:
A Design Engineer opportunity has arisen with a leading medical device company in Galway. The role involves working on the development of cutting-edge medical device products.
Responsibilities:
* Create innovative design ideas and concepts that meet high-level user needs and design requirements.
* Utilize CAD tools such as CREO and SolidWorks to generate detailed product designs, including rendered visuals using Keyshot or other visualization software.
* Explore and evaluate materials, components, and suppliers to optimize product design and functionality.
* Ensure patient-centric design by collaborating with clinical and marketing teams to define product user needs.
* Produce 2D CAD drawings detailing design components and assemblies for suppliers and manufacturing.
* Embed DFM and DFA principles into the design from the concept stage to ensure cost-effective and efficient manufacturing.
* Translate high-level user needs into detailed design requirements and specifications.
* Develop prototypes using rapid prototyping techniques for rigid, flexible, soft, and textile materials to validate design concepts.
Testing, Analysis, and User Feedback:
* Lead user testing groups to evaluate product designs in real-world settings, gathering insights for iterative improvements.
* Create user testing protocols for formative and summative testing, compliant with IEC 62366-1 standards.
* Conduct testing and analysis of design concepts to validate safety, effectiveness, and user experience.
* Use feedback from user testing and clinical evaluations to refine and improve product designs.
Cross-functional Collaboration and Communication:
* Clearly communicate design decisions, interpret literature and test results, and influence design direction through collaboration and brainstorming sessions.
* Collaborate closely with clinical teams, marketing, and manufacturing partners to ensure product designs meet user needs and manufacturing requirements.
* Build and maintain strong relationships with external suppliers and manufacturing partners to ensure timely project delivery and quality standards.
Project Leadership and Execution:
* Lead the completion of tasks and projects through a structured and planned approach to product development.
* Manage timelines effectively, ensuring timely project delivery by coordinating with cross-functional teams and external partners.
* Drive innovation and continuous improvement through creative problem-solving and iterative design development.
Requirements:
* Minimum of 4+ years of experience in product design, preferably in the medical device industry or consumer products.
* Proven track record of working on multiple product design projects from concept to manufacture.
* Expertise in CAD surfacing (experience with CREO is preferred, but training can be provided).
* Strong sketching and aesthetic design skills.
* Experience designing parts for injection moulding is highly desirable.
* Proficiency in rapid prototyping using FDM, SLS, and SLA 3D printing.
* Demonstrated ability to create robust tests for design concepts, predict outcomes, and guide design iteration.
* Hands-on experience with machined prototypes and benchtop skills for manufacturing prototypes.
* Demonstrated experience with design for assembly and manufacturing.
* Knowledge of plastics forming techniques such as injection molding, dip molding, blow molding, and thermoforming is advantageous.
* Prior experience in designing and executing usability studies, incorporating human factors and user experience into product design.
* Ability to develop and execute user testing protocols compliant with IEC 62366-1 standards.
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to effectively collaborate with internal teams and external stakeholders.
