Job Description:
Job Title: Assistant Director of Nursing
Location: Saint Joseph's Nursing Home, Ballymacprior, Killorglin, Co. Kerry
Reporting to: Director of Nursing
Purpose of the job: The Assistant Director of Nursing assists the Director of Nursing (Person in Charge) in the overall management and administration of the Nursing Home, providing care for all residents. She/he has responsibility for the supervision of the Nurses and Healthcare Assistants and Activity Coordinators and all other staff in the nursing home. She/he will work closely with and lead the staff team to ensure provision of best practice person centred care to all residents in line with HIQA regulations. She/he must also effectively manage all available resources within the allocated budget.
Service Management and Development
* Undertake the role and responsibilities of the Assistant Director of Nursing (ADON) in line with the Health Act 2007, related regulations and the Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA) Standards.
* Participate in the organisation, management and operations of the Nursing Home under direction of the Director of Nursing.
* Participate in the recruitment, development, training and supervision of staff.
* Responsible for the development and implementation of policies and procedures.
* Liaise with external organisations to promote and maintain good working relationships and high standards of care and service for residents.
* Responsible for all aspects of risk management and resident involvement.
* Oversee financial expenditure and value for money.
* Keep abreast of recent trends in practice developments.
* Ensure that the provision of a high standard of care to the resident and families in the nursing home is consistent with the mission, vision, values and strategic plan of Nazareth House Nursing Home.
* Oversee the delivery of resident care together with all members of the multidisciplinary teams.
* To effectively lead all staff in striving to achieve the mission and core values of the organisation.
* To ensure delivery of a service that will contribute to the wellbeing of residents through effective leadership, motivation and management of staff, volunteers and resources.
* To lead the development of policies, procedures, guidelines and team practice to ensure that the care provided meets residents needs in line with National Standards and best practice as laid down by HIQA and other government bodies.
* To identify and manage gaps in service provision and opportunities for development within the service.
* To participate in service planning in association with the Director of Nursing.
* To ensure regular service reviews and audits are undertaken.
* To undertake annual quality review of all aspects of the Nursing Home, in association with the Director of Nursing.
* To adhere to Nursing and Midwifery Board professional standards including “Professional Guidance for Nurses Working with Older People” (Nursing and Midwifery Board 2015).
Team Leadership & Human Resource Management
* To lead, mentor ongoing team building and development to ensure that the Nursing Home provides excellent care.
* To ensure that support and supervision is provided to a multidisciplinary team of staff and volunteers, and that regular performance and personal development appraisals are undertaken with all staff.
* To oversee staff communication and ensure that regular team meetings are held and recorded.
* To oversee rostering and ensure that there is adequate cover in the Nursing Home through ongoing operation of a comprehensive staff rota that takes account of residents’ dependency needs.
* To take part in the recruitment and selection of staff and volunteers as required.
* To ensure that all new staff receive appropriate induction to their roles and work within the Nursing Home, including knowledge of HIQA standards and the related policies, procedures and guidelines as applied in the Nursing Home, to meet the needs of the residents.
* To identify and manage through the appropriate procedures any shortcomings in the performance of new staff and report to the Director of Nursing in a timely manner.
* To manage all training needs of staff and ensure that the appropriate records are maintained and audited regularly.
* To liaise with the Director of Nursing to implement systems for human resource management.
* To ensure that all staff have access to the correct edition of all live policies, procedures and guidelines and that all staff are inducted to these documents and records of same are maintained.
* To promote the volunteering concept within the Home.
Management of Care
* To ensure that person centred care is provided in line with best practice, the Nursing Home’s policies and procedures, and in accordance with National Standards and HIQA regulations.
* To manage resident referrals including assessment of client and care needs and ensure continuity of care for all residents including the development, implementation and regular review of person-centred care plans for all; to ensure that the availability of appropriate client centred activities is provided and that clients health and wellbeing is promoted.
* To ensure that a comprehensive, person centred approach is taken to risk assessment and risk management in all areas.
* To ensure that the needs of all residents’ families are met and supported as appropriate.
* To be vigilant at all times and promote and instil a culture of vigilance for residents amongst staff.
* To manage systems and ensure that all notifiable events are recorded and reported to HIQA as required by National Standards.
* To ensure that Health & Safety and Hygiene standards are treated as priorities and that all related policies and procedures are enforced in compliance with statutory requirements.
Administration & General Management
* To ensure that communication with Director of Nursing is timely, accurate and comprehensive.
* To ensure that data and information on activities (including statistics and other relevant data) are recorded using the current system in use by organisation and to report to Director of Nursing.
* To strictly adhere to the policy of confidentiality and to ensure a culture of confidentiality is promoted in the home.
* Ensure the maintenance and general care of the buildings, gardens and equipment.
* To manage the implementation and regular review of all relevant Policies and Procedures.
Stakeholder and Public Representation and Promotion
* To promote participation of residents and their families in all aspects of care.
* To work with and support the Director of Nursing to maintain and develop good relationships with key stakeholders as well as other external people as required.
* To identify and promote the services of the Home to suitable referral sources such as local primary healthcare services and to promote availability.
* To represent the organisation at relevant seminars and conferences regionally and nationally as required.
Requirements
Qualifications and Experience and Essential Skills:
* RGN with Full NMBI (Nursing and Midwifery Board) registration.
* Evidence of continuous professional development.
* Minimum of 3 years out of the last 6 years in an Aged care setting at management level in the health and social care area.
* Post registration management qualification in health or related field desirable.
* Excellent organisational and communication skills with fluent English.
* At least 2 years management experience, ideally in a relevant setting.
* An understanding of Dementia including: current best practice in dementia care, the issues facing people living with Dementia and their carers/families and the services available.
* A post registration qualification in nursing the older person is desirable.
* An understanding and experience of Quality and Audit.
* A thorough knowledge and understanding of the legislation governing services for older people and people with dementia including HIQA standards and regulations and their practical applications.
* An understanding of other legislation relevant to the role e.g. Health & Safety, Employment legislation etc.
* Service development and service planning experience is desirable.
* Human Resource Management experience and Knowledge.
* Financial management and budgetary experience.
* Ability to develop relationships and liaise with external agencies including primary care and relevant specialist services.
Skills/Competencies:
* Strong leadership skills, able to motivate, lead and support a team in an organisation that aims for best practice and care.
* Ability to supervise, manage and motivate a team of nurses and other staff
* Ability to plan and manage change
* Excellent organisational skills in the area of general administration, resource allocations etc.
* Financial awareness and ability to operate service within a budget.
* Ability to handle effectively challenging deadlines and multiple tasks
* Excellent communication (verbal and written) and interpersonal skills
* Strong negotiation and influencing skills
* Comprehensive understanding of the Irish health system and structures
* Experienced computer user with strong MS office skills
Other Requirements:
* There is a requirement to be on call out of hours, and if necessary cover relevant shifts if required.
