Our Partner PD Logistics is seeking an experienced and motivated HGV Mechanic to take on a lead role in managing our fleet and garage operations.
This position combines hands-on mechanical expertise with strong management and leadership skills, overseeing maintenance activities and ensuring the efficient operation of our fleet.
You will collaborate closely with the Transport Manager and Financial Controller to plan and execute routine maintenance, address breakdowns, and manage offsite repairs.
A key aspect of this role is the balance between performing physical mechanical work and leading a busy workshop environment, ensuring tasks are completed to high standards and within set timelines.
Key Responsibilities: Diagnostics: Strong ability to diagnose faults and provide solutions effectively.
Team Leadership: Act as a team player, motivator, and communicator in a busy workshop environment.
Fleet Maintenance: Liaise with suppliers and external garages to maintain the fleet, including servicing, breakdowns, and accident repairs, ensuring compliance with CVRT standards.
Workshop Operations: Oversee the workshop, ensuring tasks are completed on time, efficiently, and to the highest quality standards.
Vehicle Inspections & Repairs: Conduct safety inspections, diagnose faults, and carry out repairs on HGVs and trailers.
CVRT Testing: Prepare vehicles for CVRT testing, ensuring all work complies with legal roadworthiness standards.
Documentation: Complete all necessary inspection documents, job sheets, and timesheets accurately and in a timely manner.
Legal Compliance: Ensure a strong understanding of roadworthiness and legal requirements for commercial vehicles.
Workshop Management: Supervise and manage garage operations, ensuring safety, organization, and proper housekeeping.
Fleet Renewal: Contribute to the fleet renewal programme, collaborating with the Transport Manager and Financial Controller to ensure the fleets long-term health and viability.
Operational Efficiency: Continuously improve operational processes, efficiency, and fleet management strategies.
Requirements: FETAC Level 6 Qualification in Heavy Vehicle Mechanics (or equivalent) in vehicle repairs.
Commercial vehicle experience, particularly with HGVs and trailers.
Ability to work independently in a high-pressure workshop environment.
Fluent English, both written and spoken, with excellent communication skills.
C+E Driving Licence (preferred, not essential).
At least 3 years of experience in a similar role (preferred).
Desirable: Proven ability to supervise and schedule tasks across the garage team.
Strong problem-solving skills and a proactive, can-do attitude.
