Job descriptionInland Fisheries Ireland are excited to launch our 2025 Seasonal Recruitment campaign.We have fantastic opportunities available for Seasonal Fisheries Assistants which would be well suited to those who have an interest in protecting, managing and conserving Ireland's inland fisheries and sea angling resources.Inland Fisheries Ireland carries out applied fisheries research to assess the conservation status of Ireland's fish species, to monitor fisheries stocks in inland and coastal waters and to explore environmental issues that have an impact on fish and their habitats.The role of the Seasonal Fisheries Assistant mainly involves assisting the Senior Research Officers and their teams in the collection, ordering and analysis of relevant biological and physical data in the aquatic environment.Seasonal Fisheries Assistants are also involved in assisting with data entry and preliminary analysis of biological and physical data such as preparing charts, graphs, and figures for further analysis.The successful candidates may be assigned to one or more of the following projects;Water Framework Directive Fish Monitoring ProgrammeClimate Change Mitigation Research ProgrammeCoarse Fish & Pike Research ProgrammeNational Barriers ProgrammeEel Monitoring Programme/ Habitats Directive ProjectMarine & Sports FishYou can find out more about our Research work here.There will be an element of travelling across Ireland for parts of the contract and conducting field work in all weather conditions. Field work will be influenced by weather; consequently, the position will require flexibility regarding working hours, particularly during the summer months. Transport will be provided for field duties. Candidates should be comfortable working outside in all weather conditions and on/near bodies of water.The positions will be based in This role will be based at the Erriff Fishery, IFI’s research centre on the Erriff River, Co. Galway, (the National Salmon id Index Catchment). Galway, will involve monitoring of fish traps at Tawnyard and Aasleagh,Assisting with PIT tagging of salmon and sea troutAssist with field surveys using electric fishing, netting and other sampling techniques as required in a range of habitat types.Assist with processing fish samples and collate scale, otolith and opercular bone samples to provide information on age profile and growth rates of fish species.Assist with compilation and analyses of biological and physical data. EG prepare graphs and summaries, perform computations in numerical summaries and cross references facts, dates and other data.Maintain raw data and all other records in a clear concise format.Compile and maintain all records in a manner compatible with GIS and use GIS to prepare mapping outputs.Assist the Senior Research Officer in ensuring that other elements of the programme, not specifically linked to data collection and analysis, are achieved in a timely and efficient manner.Provide any technical support necessary for timely delivery of the appropriate programme.Liaise with other IFI staff working on related projects as required.Undertake all other duties and responsibilities as may be assigned from time to time by the Senior Research Officer or nominee.We expect to hold interviews for this role during W/C 11th March 2025. REMUNERATIONThe salary scale for the position is at the level of Fisheries Assistant as applies in Inland Fisheries Ireland. New entrants to the public sector are required to commence employment on Point 1 (€30,979). Candidates should note that salary will not be subject to negotiation and the rate of remuneration may be adjusted from time to time in line with Government pay policy.
