Position:Senior House Officer in Pharmacology & Haematology Commencement Date:Monday 13th January 2025 MED Directorate The Medicine and Emergency Directorate, (MED), which includes all specialties in Internal Medicine, was established in 2014 and has consolidated all specialties of medicine within a single clinical governance structure.
Its mission, aims and objectives focus on safety, (zero harm), quality, (excellent outcomes), patient experience, access and flow.
The Directorate has agreed a clinically-led management cycle for continuous improvement for adoption across its specialties.
Clinical Specialty Leads have been appointed with a common structure and data-driven approach to specialty and directorate operations meetings.
HOPE Directorate The Haematology Dept./National Stem Cell Transplant Unit/National Centre for Hereditary coagulation disorders in St. Jamess Hospital provides a service in Haematological Oncology, Thrombosis/Haemostasis and General Haematology.
The entire department comprises ten consultants, a lecturer, four specialist registrars, two registrars and four House Officers.
There is weekly SPR/Registrar teaching.
There are a variety of educational meetings including weekly MDT meetings.
The SHO is exposed to a wide variety of general haematology including care of haemoglobinopathy patients, day ward practice, the inpatient and outpatient care of patients with haematological malignancies, haemophilia/specialist coagulation services and stem cell transplantation.
In this post, the Registrar will gain competencies and skills in the management of patients with complex malignant and non malignant chronic illnesses and experience in dealing with their families.
Medical Grand Rounds are held weekly.
Two hospital teams present a wide range of topics to include interesting teaching cases, new treatments, medical advances and research.
Attendance at these meetings is mandatory.
Department of General Medicine The division of internal medicine at St. James Hospital is primarily focused on the care of acute emergency medical admissions.
We are aligned with the objectives of the acute medicine programme and as well as having a busy clinical service we have a vibrant research function and contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate clinical education.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities The safe and efficient assessment of patients, This involves: Assessing patients as requested by the registrar shift leader and/or CNM in charge Showing initiative in helping to manage the departmental workload Supporting senior staff in the Resuscitation area Always communicating patient management decisions to the nurse in charge Ensuring adequate patient handover Recognising ones need for senior support Develops an appropriate knowledge base by attending EM teaching sessions, appropriate CPD meetings and undertaking private study.
Balances their educational needs with service commitment Participates in clinical risk management and audit activities in the department Is supportive of students, interns, nursing staff and other members of the Emergency department team Is supported by the Consultants, Registrars and the multidisciplinary emergency team.
Demonstrating appropriate levels of professionalism in all aspects of work and behaviour.
