The EMEA Energy & Water Resources team is focused on the delivery of secure, sustainable, clean and affordable energy and water infrastructure to support the needs of existing and future customers of AWS as they migrate and expand their interaction with the Cloud. The energy that AWS runs on comes in a variety of forms: electricity is the workhorse, powering data centres, drawn from a grid connection providing secure power and backed off with cost-effective energy supply and renewables credentials.
In this role, you will own the project management, delivery and operationalisation of energy projects to enable and optimise AWS access to grid connection capacity across the EMEA region. You will be responsible for the interface with project origination, management of the subsequent execution, and thereafter the activities to operationalise the commercial and technical aspects of the project to ensure successful implementation. This will be achieved by you leading the project management and delivery of generation and energy storage projects – you ‘ll pick up where origination of the project has been executed and drive the delivery and implementation of the associated works from a project management, procurement, contracting, engineering and optimisation perspective, working with internal partners teams, external stakeholders and delivery partners to ensure delivery, on time, in budget and meeting the needs of AWS to support our customers.
The candidate will need to be able to identify key risks to programme and delivery, working with internal partner teams and delivery partners to mitigate and develop solutions to ensure on time delivery. The candidate will work across a portfolio of projects, managing complexity, ambiguity and differing timescales, multiple relationships with the ability to manage conflicting priorities should they arise. The candidate will be a pragmatic visionary with a result orientated approach, experienced in developing and delivering pioneering projects, have an analytical skill set, strong financial acumen and a track record of working with utilities, regulators and developers across the energy industry.
Key job responsibilities
•Ownership for mechanisms relating to control and management of project programmes, budget and relationships with project partners (internal and external to AWS) post-execution of commercial agreements, including but not limited to financial close, maintaining cost control, variations and contractor claims to preserve the project.
Show bias for action in recognising opportunities to expedite, ensuring contractors understand and achieve programme and mitigating risks and delays,
Earn Trust by working collaboratively with partner teams, and external supply chain, to ensure design, deployment and delivery compliant with the relevant planning, HSE requirements, environmental permit obligations and lenders requirements and CPs.
The ability to Think Big and understand when to engage support from partner teams and external resources to maintain project delivery timescales
Delivering results by pushing projects through to execution, operation, energisation enabling capacity to support DC scaling and investment
What qualities due to you need to bring to be successful:
•Experienced project and programme management, delivery and execution of complex energy generation and storage solutions projects (standalone, co-located or integrated), delivering low carbon solutions to enable scaling of DC capacity across the EMEA region
•Experienced in a develop-build-implement environment, with experienced of grid networks or generation assets particularly relevant
•Flexible, adaptive and innovative in your approach and ability to manage multiple medium and large scale projects, and internal/external interfaces at any one time, often with diverse range of technologies
•Capability to engage and lead partner teams and personnel to execute, who may or may not report to you
•Be able to lead engineering design, contract and field execution strategies to enable project delivery in conjunction with procurement, supply chain and other internal partner teams
•Manage engineers, consultants and other advisors throughout large and complex projects
•Experience of the pre-tender and tender stages of procuring contracts for the design, manufacturing and/or installation of industrial equipment
•Manage early engagement with stakeholders (including equipment suppliers) to identify obsolescence issues and other risks to replication/scaling of engineering solutions
•Manage the technical elements of the procurement process for specific contracts
•Ensure that lessons-learnt and knowledge-capture are practiced as business as usual
•Be responsible for the timely delivery of engineering studies directly or via key contractors
•Prepare with the multidisciplinary team specific post-FID contracts (terms & conditions, contractual appendices and technical specification)
•Drive the implementation of site-specific design changes into the design deliverables in the programme, including contract specifications to enable robust pricing and cost optimisation
•The ability to prioritize your own workload, especially when juggling multiple projects at various stages of development, construction or transition to operation
•Strong communication – you’ll work with a range of internal and external contacts and partners, with varied capabilities and potentially limited understanding of grid and energy generation projects, building relationships to optimise performance will be key to delivering the role
•Creativeness in ways to improve solutions or expand upon the existing offer, especially when working on behind the meter or co-located projects
•Commercial experience, especially experience handling contractor claims and change orders
•Experience and understanding of the permitting process and compliance requirements is beneficial
•Identify and develop cost savings projects and initiatives related to energy infrastructure.
•Embraces and engages with new people and ideas, driving simplification at all levels
•Good understanding of the complexity of major projects, including interface management between scope areas
