Job Description
Duration: Temporary externally funded non Grant-in-Aid contract post, the indicative duration of which is 23 Months, subject to contract. A panel may be formed from which future similar vacancies may be filled; such a panel will remain active for a maximum period of 12 months.
Basic Function: This competition seeks to recruit two highly motivated candidates to work in a Technologist role on an industry funded project. The project is linked between the Food Chemistry and Technology department in Teagasc Moorepark and one of Ireland’s main nutritional product manufacturers. This position provides an exciting opportunity for someone to both learn and contribute to the area of dairy chemistry and analytical methodology. The research aims to analyse a large sample set of dairy ingredients for functionality. Duties will include extensive laboratory-based research and the project will be based in the Teagasc Moorepark facilities in Fermoy, Co. Cork.

Background: The main task of this project is based on dairy ingredients. The position is based in the Teagasc Food Chemistry and Technology Department in Moorepark, Fermoy, Co. Cork. The role will require the successful candidate to be able to organise, test and acquire data on a significant number of commercial dairy powders and to disseminate results to the wider project team.
Job Objectives
Duties & Responsibilities specific to this project:
* Oversee acquisition, organisation, trending and statistical analysis of data generated from laboratory analysis.
* Complete all day to day activities as allocated by the laboratory manager/supervisor.
* Conduct routine and specialized tests on various dairy powders.
* Collect and prepare samples of various dairy products for testing, ensuring that all samples are handled and stored correctly to maintain their integrity.
* Perform a variety of laboratory tests, including HPLC, spectroscopy, particle size analysis, heat stability, solubility, wettability, etc.
* Accurately interpret, record and systematically report test results.
* Maintain and calibrate laboratory equipment.
* Development and implementation of new test methods and quality control protocols to improve testing accuracy and efficiency.
* Maintain a clean and safe laboratory environment.
* Stay updated with the latest trends and advancements in dairy science and laboratory techniques. Participate in professional development opportunities to enhance skills and knowledge.
Additional Duties & Responsibilities:
* To assist Teagasc in meeting the commitments of the Quality Customer Service Charter and Action Plan.
* To actively participate in the annual business planning and Performance Management Development System (PMDS) processes.
* Fully co-operate with the provisions made for ensuring the health, safety and welfare of themselves, fellow staff and non-Teagasc staff and co-operate with management in enabling Teagasc to comply with legal obligations.
* Any other duties as may be assigned from time to time.

Skills Requirement
Essential
* A Level 8 qualification (as recognised on the National Framework of Qualifications or equivalent), in a Science discipline or a related discipline.
* Demonstrated research and technical expertise in analytical methodology.
* Excellent project management, analytical, report writing and data analysis skills.
* Ability to work as part of a team, including consulting, collaborating and building relationships with key stakeholders.
* Commitment to teamwork and collaborating with colleagues as per our Teagasc Together ethos.
* Strives for high quality of work and demonstrates commitment to the programme.
* Ability to communicate effectively to enable knowledge and technology transfer.
Desirable
* A postgraduate degree and/or research experience in Food Science, Process Engineering or related discipline would be a distinct advantage.
* Evidence of research activity (publications, conference presentations, awards) and future scholarly output (working papers, research proposals etc).
* Experience in setting own research agenda.
* Evidence of teamwork and collaboration with relevant partners.
Other
As this role will involve driving vehicles, candidates must satisfy and continue to satisfy during employment with Teagasc, legal requirements to drive a car unaccompanied on Irish public roads.
Eligibility
This is an open public competition. Should a current serving Teagasc staff member be successful in their application through open public competition for this post, their current contract of employment with Teagasc will come to an end on taking up this post.
