Senior Engineer - Future Operations (Power System / Energy market)
Job Type: Permanent & Full-Time
Location: Dublin 4 (Hybrid, 2 Days in Office, 3 Days Remote/WFH)

They operate the Power System with world leading levels of variable asynchronous Renewable Generation, ensuring that everyone has power when they need it. But that’s not all, we are now transforming the Power System for future generations.

The Opportunity
They are now seeking an Innovative, Solution focussed, Resilient and Motivated individual to join our leadership team and play a key role in the transition to a Low Carbon Energy future.
They are responsible for visioning and Planning the Power System and market of the future as well as innovating in how we operate and develop the grid to ensure we meet climate change targets and decarbonise the Electricity System. Creating a culture of Continuous Improvement that drives technical and process innovation is central to delivering on these roles.
This role isn’t just important – it’s critical. You will have the opportunity to work with the Leadership Team to vision and plan the Power System and market of the future. To do this you will work collaboratively across the organisation and with our stakeholders as we strive to transform the Power System for future generations.
The Team comprises highly skilled professionals with a variety of different disciplines, including Engineering, IT, Commerce and Policy, all committed to helping meet the ambitious targets for adding renewable generation to our network and the Electrification of our economy and society.
The Future Operations function is leading the programme for putting in place what is needed to operate the Power System in 2030 and is responsible for developing the scenarios, options and optimum pathways to ensure that the operational ambition for the power system is realised.
The work of Future Operations is wide-ranging covering the design and development of the operational systems, tools, system services, standards and operational policies required to operate the power system of the future.
Future Operations has multiple open roles across the function requiring different skillsets and covering a range of responsibilities / activities, for example:
1. Undertaking steady-state and dynamic modelling, and supporting the development and operation of Online Control Centre decision support tools;
2. Undertaking system studies and /or analysis to support operational policy development;
3. Facilitating the development and integration of new technologies and innovations on the power system to enable them to operate efficiently and effectively.
About you
Successful candidates will have the following:
1. A degree in engineering or a closely related discipline
2. Strong technical skills and knowledge of the Power System and /or Energy market;
3. Ability to lead and take responsibility for Medium / Large Projects;
4. Strong Analysis, judgement and problem-solving skills along with an ability to make decisions and recommendations in a changing and dynamic environment;
5. Excellent organisational skills and strong track record of delivery;
6. Ability to guide, persuade and influence others through developed skills of communication and diplomacy;
7. Strong communicator, able to articulate technical concepts and analysis to non-technical audiences and business leaders;
8. Self-motivation, enthusiasm and capable of delivering in context of changing parameters/requirements.
Given the variety of roles, depending on the activities and responsibilities of the role-holder, it is desirable that candidates will have some of the following capabilities:
1. Proficiency carrying out Power System Modelling and Analysis using DSA Tools and developing bespoke tools to integrate with the commercial software using programming languages such as MATLAB or Python. Experience with Plexos would also be beneficial.
2. Experience Leading Strategic, Change-Related projects relating to the development and integration of New Technologies and Innovations (e.g. Hybrid technologies, Battery Energy Storage Systems, Low Carbon Inertia Services) on the Power System to enable them to operate efficiently and effectively.
3. Proficiency with steady-state and dynamic Modelling with a high penetration of inverter based resources;
4. Experience with supporting the development and delivery of Online Control Centre decision support tools;
