Human Resources Manager at UPMC Sports Surgery Clinic
UPMC Sports Surgery Clinic are currently recruiting for the role of Clinical Nurse Manager 1 - Theatre.
The position reports to and is accountable and professionally responsible to the Theatre Manager and the Director of Nursing in all matters relating to the job.
Outline of Duties and Responsibilities:
The Clinical Nurse Manager 1 (Theatre) is responsible for providing, maintaining and developing patient centred care to a high standard. This is achieved through effective organisation of nursing services in the Theatre and the overall administration of the unit.
The Clinical Nurse Manager 1 (Theatre) will be required to possess a clear understanding and commitment to the ethos and philosophy of the UPMC Sports Surgery Clinic.
Duties and Responsibilities:
General Accountability:
1. Maintain throughout the Clinic an awareness of the primacy of patient in relation to all Clinic activities.
2. Create and promote healthy working relationships.
3. Demonstrate behaviour consistent with the values of the Clinic.
4. The person chosen will be accountable for the nursing service provided to patients in pre-operative and post-operative areas. This includes making provisions for the best possible standard of nursing care of patients at all times.
5. Assessment of patient care needs.
6. Communicate with relatives and visitors of patients as required.
7. Setting and monitoring standards.
8. Actively participate in the hospital’s Accreditation programme and the ethos of Continuous Quality Improvement and implement and maintain procedures in theatre.
9. Keep the Theatre Manager appraised of all issues as required.
Specific Clinical/Theatre Responsibilities:
1. Responsible for special instruments and implants required in Theatre.
2. Responsible for the monitoring and ordering of basic supplies in Theatre.
3. Responsible for Histology and Microbiology.
4. Responsible for ensuring instruments/implants are ordered as required.
5. Theatre-CSSD coordinator.
Professional responsibilities:
1. As a nurse practitioner you must practice within the Code of Practice, Rules and Guidelines set out by An Bord Altranais and comply with Policies and Procedures of the UPMC Sports Surgery Clinic.
2. Ensure each patient is treated as an individual, and that his/her needs are attended to and their physical, psychological and religious well being is respected.
3. Give direct patient care in selected patient situations and serve as a behavioural model for excellence in practice.
4. Set standards of Nursing Practice. Communicate these standards to the Nursing Personnel; audit and change standards as necessary.
5. Liaise effectively with all members of the multi-disciplinary team to ensure that care delivery is patient focused and of the highest standard.
6. Ensure that a professional standard of behaviour is maintained by all nursing team members.
7. Facilitate effective communication with patients, relatives and multi-disciplinary team as necessary.
8. Adherence to departmental patient identification policy at all times.
9. Provide a high standard of safe practice for patient care.
10. Ensure that all equipment in the Theatre is checked by an appropriate user according to hospital policy.
11. Anticipate and be aware of needs of the multi-disciplinary team during anaesthetic and operative process.
12. Preserve the dignity and rights of the patients at all times during their stay in the operating department anaesthetised or conscious.
13. Document and record accurately all details of nursing care delivered in the peri-operative period.
14. Complete theatre register as required by hospital policy.
15. Maintain accurate levels of Anaesthetic/Pharmaceutical supplies.
16. Ensure patient confidentiality is respected and maintained at all times.
17. Ensure nursing care is based on the latest research findings and constitute best practice.
18. Demonstrate initiative and be receptive to new ideas and development.
Administrative Responsibilities:
1. Communicate with the Theatre Manager on all matters in relation to the Theatre.
2. Communicate with wards and other departments to ensure continuity of patient care and safe transfer of patients.
3. Ensure all staff attend mandatory in-service education.
4. Carry out staff appraisals.
5. Deputise for the Theatre Manager as required.
6. Ensure specimens are sent to reception for collection at the appropriate times.
7. Organise instruments from companies as required.
8. Organise instruments to be returned to companies as required.
9. Deal with issues that arise in theatre.
10. Ensure effective communication with all disciplines in the theatre department.
11. Mentor junior staff and HCAs.
12. Delegate jobs to Staff Nurses as required.
13. Roster staff to ensure skill mix and equitability as per the requirements of the Theatre Manager.
14. Guide and direct staff in the formulation of policies for safe practice.
15. Maintain safe custody of controlled drugs according to hospital policy.
16. Allocation and rotation of staff as per the requirements of the Theatre Manager.
17. Consultation with other nursing teams and Theatre Manager to ensure efficient and effective service.
18. Co-ordination and maintenance of equipment and monitoring the use of resources to ensure the unnecessary expenditure by misuse.
19. As part of management of the department be involved in strategic planning.
20. Act as a full member of the Theatre Nursing Team in the clinical area.
21. Positive active participation in Change Management and Development.
22. Display qualities of leadership and good communications with all users of service and other service providers.
23. Attend meetings and sit on committees of the department/hospital as required.
24. Monitor Infection Control policies and liaise with Infection Control Nurse.
25. Ensure Health & Safety standard care are met and enforced.
26. Use knowledge, judgement and experience to develop ways of coping with crisis situation i.e. patient and staff.
27. Report accidents and incidents as per hospital policy.
28. Observe and uphold daily cleaning standards in the department. Report any inadequacies.
29. Liaise with the CSSD Manager on areas of decontamination and sterilisation of equipment.
Education and Staff Development Responsibility:
1. Educate all nursing and allied staff, including orientation of new staff to the speciality to develop excellent work practices. To provide mentorship and educational programme for those within the speciality.
2. Support and participate in education and in-service programmes for all staff.
3. To ensure that all team members have undertaken mandatory training, reporting any non-compliance to Nursing Administration.
4. Promote self care and wellness through patient education, health promotion and training, communication with relatives and significant others in order that the patient will have an understanding of their condition thereby increasing their compliance with treatment and advice.
5. To work with the Theatre Manager in ensuring all staff annual appraisals are carried out.
6. Be prepared to undertake further training to enhance knowledge and skills within the specialty.
Self Development Responsibility:
1. Demonstrate a high level of interest in advances in the clinical management of patient care by attending and participating in in-service programmes, lectures, seminars and staff conferences.
2. Study days that have a general focus as well as days that have an advanced practice focus.
3. Engage in personal development planning and continuous professional education.
4. Participate in clinic committees as required, attend and contribute to interdepartmental and other meetings.
5. Ensure adherence to clinic policies and An Bord Altranais (NMBI) guidelines.
6. Assist the Theatre Manager or deputy in maintaining a level of excellence in patient care by maintaining standards and supporting the overall management of the Department.
7. Such other duties appropriate to the post as may be assigned from time to time by the Theatre Manager and Director of Nursing.
Qualifications / Experience:
1. Be a Registered General Nurse and registered with NMBI.
2. Have a minimum of 5 years post registration experience.
3. Demonstrate experience of managing a team of nurses and ideally experience in an orthopaedic facility.
4. Have excellent interpersonal skills and proven written and verbal communication abilities.
5. Have the ability to work on own initiative, prioritise and manage a number of issues simultaneously and demonstrate attention to detail.
6. Be able to identify potential difficulties and formulate solutions.
7. Be of good character.
