Summary of Post
RCSI currently has a position available for a Research Assistant to work on a project funded by the Irish Cancer Society. The post will be carried out at the new research labs in the RCSI Education and Research Centre at Beaumont Hospital. The project will focus on breast cancer and understanding the molecular biology of cancer recurrence.
Specifically, the project aim is to visualise cancer cells as they reawaken from dormancy. Using cell line models of Tamoxifen-induced dormancy, the Research Assistant will study the expression of proteins that can be used to distinguish dormant from reawakened cells. Patient blood samples will also be used to test the potential of translating a protein biomarker to clinical applications. The Research Assistant will be responsible for conducting a number of lab-based assays to investigate protein expression.
Specific Duties:
* To conduct the day to day management and delivery of the scientific work associated with the research grant
* Perform relevant molecular biology techniques such as PCR, western blot, ELISA and tissue culture. Support/training will be provided for these techniques where necessary.
* Collect and record experimental data
* Data processing, analysis and report writing
* Regular presentation of results at weekly lab meetings and at other meetings as necessary
* Support the preparation of scientific reports, grant review reports and manuscripts as required
* Attend project meetings and seminars as necessary
* Liaise with the Principal Investigator, colleagues, patients and stakeholders on matters relating to this and future projects
* Other such duties as may be assigned from time to time
Qualifications – (Essential):
A degree or MSc in a relevant biomedical science
Knowledge & Experience – (Essential):
* Competency working in a biomedical research laboratory
* Excellent attention to detail and record keeping skills
* Excellent written and oral communication skills
* Excellent organisational skills
* Ability to work successfully and engage positively with colleagues, collaborators and project stakeholders
* Conscientious and motivated
* Experience in tissue or cell culture would be desirable but is not essential
