Position Description
The Renewable Projects Development area within the ESB Engineering and Major Projects directorate provides project management and engineering services to enable development of renewable power projects for ESB and external clients. Renewable projects include Onshore wind, Offshore wind, Solar and Storage. Our wind projects range from onshore wind farms of c20 MW to major offshore wind farms of over 500 MW.
A Senior Grid Engineer is required to provide technical support to ESB projects, both domestic and international.
Key Responsibilities
Responsibilities will cover the items below:
1. Techno-economic grid connection feasibility studies for a range of renewable energy, thermal generation, storage and hybrid projects in Ireland and Great Britain.
2. Preparation of grid connection applications for renewable energy, thermal generation and storage projects.
3. Perform grid connection offer reviews and undertake grid connection risk analysis and mitigation.
4. Connection method negotiation with the relevant system operator to include proposing innovative solutions to reduce costs, constraints and/or lead times.
5. Shallow connection design including the development of high level SLD’s.
6. Build relationships with key stakeholders, including but not limited to ESB Asset Development, CRU, ESB Networks, EirGrid, National Grid, GB DNO’s, Scottish Power Transmission, Scottish Hydro Transmission and Ofgem.
7. Represent ESB on industry forums and working groups such as IWEA grid committee.
8. Maintain a high level of industry awareness an in particular with regard to grid policy and regulatory changes that impact areas such as grid access and charging.
9. Management and delivery of Grid Code compliance activities for ESB storage and generation projects for all technologies.
10. Monitoring of installation and commissioning standards.
11. Auditing for compliance of Commissioning Code of Safe Practice
12. Lead role in the interface and handover of projects to Renewables O&M
13. Management of external consultants and contractors.
Knowledge, Skills and Experience
Essential
14. 5 years engineering experience, with at least 3 in a comparable role.
15. A strong understanding of all elements of HV Substation system design, specification preparation, tender evaluation and standards.
16. Experience with transmission and distribution planning standards.
17. Experience with grid and distribution codes.
18. Strong commercial, project management and design review capability.
19. The demonstrated ability to meet deadlines and manage multiple stakeholders.
20. A strong work ethic with a clear focus on delivery to ESB’s ’Brighter Futures Strategy’.
21. Ability to work and share knowledge and competencies within a team structure.
22. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
23. Flexibility which is important in all aspects of the role, including travel nationally and internationally.
24. Strong report writing capability.
Desirable
25. Experience with generator grid connection life cycle costs including shallow connection costs, Use of System charges, losses, balancing charges.
26. Experience with grid connection policies, rules and regulations
27. Commissioning and Testing of substation assets.
28. Submarine cable experience
29. Chartered Engineer Status
30. Project Management qualification
31. Independent Engineer / Due diligence experience.
32. Working knowledge of Health, Safety and Environment Standards and procedures.
Qualifications
Essential
33. Level 8 qualification in Engineering/physical science or similar qualification with experience.
Desirable
34. Masters in Engineering/ Physical Science or related discipline.
