General Practitioner or General Practitioner with a Special Interest in Cardiology
Location: UPMC 4th Practice, Mallow Primary Health Care, Mallow, Co. Cork.
Position Overview:
UPMC is seeking a General Practitioner (GP), or a GP with a special interest in Cardiology, to join our multidisciplinary medical team. The successful candidate will provide comprehensive clinical care, lead both general and cardiovascular health screening services, and drive patient outreach and engagement efforts. This role will focus on enhancing UPMC’s health screening services while referring patients to the wider UPMC network for advanced care when necessary.
The ideal candidate will be registered on the Irish Medical Council (IMC) Specialist Register and will have a background in general practice, with a particular emphasis on cardiovascular health. They will have experience in delivering general health screenings, including cardiovascular risk assessments, as well as leading initiatives to promote health and prevent disease in the community. The GP will work closely with cardiologists, cardiac technicians, and other healthcare professionals to ensure high-quality patient care.
Skills and Qualifications:
* IMC Registration: Must be registered on the IMC Specialist Register, with a strong background in general practice, ideally with a special interest in cardiology.
* Postgraduate Experience: Minimum of 3 years post-graduate experience, including exposure to both general health and cardiovascular care.
* Health Screening Expertise: Experience in delivering health screening services, including general health checks (e.g., blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes screenings) as well as cardiovascular risk assessments, stress testing, and preventive care for cardiovascular diseases.
* Clinical Skills: Ability to assess and manage general medical conditions, particularly those associated with cardiovascular risk factors such as hypertension, hypercholesterolemia, and diabetes.
* Communication Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills, essential for patient consultations, teamwork, and collaborative care.
* Digital Skills: Proficiency with clinical IT systems for supporting research, data collection, and clinical operations management.
Specialist Skills for GPs with an Interest in Cardiology:
* Cardiac Risk Assessment: Expertise in conducting comprehensive cardiovascular risk assessments, advising on preventive measures, and managing cardiac health according to best practices.
* General and Health Screening Leadership: Proven ability to lead and manage general health and cardiovascular screening programs, including general health checks, cholesterol monitoring, blood pressure checks, ECGs, stress tests, and lifestyle assessments.
* Referral Pathways: Familiarity with referral processes to cardiology for advanced diagnostics and treatments such as echocardiograms, angiography, or interventional cardiology procedures.
* Preventive Health Programs: Experience in developing and implementing preventive health programs that address general health and cardiovascular risk factors.
* Multidisciplinary Collaboration: Ability to collaborate with cardiologists, general practitioners, cardiac technicians, and other specialists to ensure seamless, high-quality patient care.

Roles and Responsibilities:
* Patient Care: Provide comprehensive medical care, including general health checks (e.g., blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes screening) and cardiovascular assessments, while ensuring timely follow-ups and appropriate management.
* Health Screening Programs: Lead both general and cardiovascular health screening services, ensuring patients are screened for key health risk factors and receive appropriate care.
* Cardiac Preventive Care: Develop and implement UPMC’s preventive cardiac care programs, educating patients on heart health, lifestyle interventions, and pharmacological treatments.
* Diagnostic Testing: Conduct and interpret general health screening tests (e.g., blood pressure, cholesterol) and cardiac diagnostic tests such as ECGs and cholesterol assessments.
* Referral Pathways: Facilitate patient referrals to cardiology services when advanced diagnostics or specialist care is required.
* Supervision of Long-Term Care: Oversee ongoing monitoring for patients enrolled in health screening programs, ensuring regular check-ups and long-term health outcomes.
* Marketing and Outreach: Actively contribute to marketing and outreach initiatives, raising awareness of both general health and cardiovascular health screening services within the community.
* Research and Data Management: Assist in collecting and analysing data on general health and cardiovascular screening outcomes, contributing to ongoing clinical research efforts.
Reports to:
* Clinical Governance: Reports to the Director of UPMC Sports Medicine and Institute for Health for clinical oversight.
* Operational Management: Reports to the General Manager of UPMC Sports Medicine and Institute for Health for operational and strategic direction.
* Research Oversight: Reports to the Research Director for input on research activities, data analysis, and clinic development.
