Clinical Nurse Manager III - Medical Services

Overview of role:
The CNM3 of the Medical Services will be a key member of the Medical Services team and leads the clinical management of the Med-Surg Ward, Cath lab, Coronary Care Unit, Medical Oncology Day unit, radiotherapy nursing services, and the night duty nurse managers along with the ADON for Medical services. The CNM 3 role is pivotal in upholding the UPMC values in the clinical setting ensuring accessible, world-class care that puts patients first. In addition to the coordination and management of the services and resources within the departments, the post holder will work in collaboration with the ADON and other members of the inter-professional team to ensure that the care of patients is efficient and effective. This role will suit an enthusiastic and motivated individual. This is a full-time permanent position.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
Professional / Clinical
* Act as a positive clinical role model and provide support and clinical advice to staff. Demonstrate expert practice where appropriate.
* The post holder will have continuing responsibility for the quality of care within the medical wards/departments and the achievement of safe, professional and competent nursing practice.
* To work in close collaboration with the Director of Nursing, Assistant Directors of Nursing, and other members of the inter-professional team ensuring that the medical beds are effectively used.
* Develop evidence-based policies and procedures in line with best practice for the speciality in collaboration with the Director of Nursing, Assistant Directors of Nursing, and Consultants.
* To ensure that the available Hospital resources are used in the most efficient and effective manner.
* To ensure that staff attend all mandatory training and that their individual development needs are identified and undertaken through yearly engagement and competency review.
* To contribute to Hospital wide activities that promote and support the development of the service provided.
* To ensure that relationships and own behaviour is managed in line with Hospital ethos, policies, and SOP’s.
* To ensure all staff have an understanding and adhere to the UPMC values.
* Take responsibility and accountability for the delivery of professional, competent and high-quality nursing care in UPMC Whitfield Hospital.
Managerial:
* Be responsible for the allocation of staff within your departments, ensuring adequate staffing is provided on a daily basis.
* Report any difficulties to the Director of Nursing and Assistant Director of Nursing.
* Ensure the Hospital’s time management system is updated in a timely manner.
* Take responsibility for effective rostering, ensuring that skill mix is appropriate.
* Develop locally agreed contingency escalation plans with the Director of Nursing.
* Ensure daily huddles are performed and regular communication with the medical wards.
* Assist in the satisfactory resolution of verbal complaints and the management of complaints at a clinical level.
* Provide a safe working environment, ensuring practice is in line with Health and Safety and Employment Legislation.
* Manage performance, sickness absence and staff grievances in conjunction with the Director of Nursing.
* To undertake a pro-active role in the accreditation process.
Professional Accountability and Development:
* Ensure staff and self remain professionally updated and ensure care is delivered in line with the latest research.
* Maintain own professional portfolio and participate in the Hospital’s clinical supervision programme.
* Provide a supportive and learning environment in the ward area.
* Ensure that statutory rules, guidelines and legislation are understood and complied with.
* Act as a positive role model with regards to the Hospital ethos and UPMC values.
* Develop and maintain a high level of knowledge of relevant policies and procedures.
Quality & Audit:
* Participate and lead as required in clinical audit and research activity.
* Work closely with the Quality and Patient Safety team.
Health and Safety:
* To uphold UPMC Whitfield Hospital’s policy requirements in relation to Fire, Infection Control, Radiation Safety and Health and Safety regulations.
* Identify potential risks for all staff, patients and visitors.
Qualifications & Experience:
* Be registered, or eligible for registration in the General Division of the live Register of Nurses kept by NMBI.
* A minimum of five years experience in the acute hospital setting, with minimum 2 years at managerial level, is required.
* Display evidence of continuing professional development.
* Good working knowledge of Microsoft packages is essential.
* Excellent communication skills and ability to work as part of a wider senior nurse management team is essential.
