Ad Astra Fellow - Assistant Professor in Renewable Offshore Engineering Systems
The School of Civil Engineering at University College Dublin (UCD) is seeking a highly qualified candidate for the role of Ad-Astra Lecturer/Assistant Professor Above the Bar in Offshore Renewable Energy, focusing on geotechnical or hydraulic engineering.
This position involves joining and taking a leadership role across the Centre for Critical Infrastructure Research (CCIR) and the Dooge Centre for Water Resources Research (CWRR) to advance the School's research in implementing offshore renewable energy technologies.
* Developing offshore site investigation tools
* Characterising seabed sediments
* Exploring various offshore mooring and anchoring systems for floating wind
* Understanding hydrodynamic loads on offshore renewable energy structures
* Utilising AI and digitisation in wind and wave forecasting
* Exploring georisk mitigation strategies for safe and sustainable engineering in offshore environments
Ireland aims to generate 80% of its electricity from renewable sources as outlined in its Climate Action Plan. With a significant potential for offshore renewable energy from wind, wave, and tidal sources in Ireland's maritime area spanning 490,000 km2, it is essential to enhance our understanding of many aspects of this resource from a civil engineering perspective.
The successful candidate will join a world-leading research centre with a clear focus on delivering excellent research and education. The School is part of the UCD College of Engineering and Architecture, which was recently awarded a renewal of Athena SWAN bronze award for ensuring an equal, diverse, and inclusive environment.
Sustainable development of renewable energy in EU member states is crucial for achieving energy security, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and addressing climate change.
