The Substation Design Standards Group are responsible for the development of our substation design solutions for ESB Networks. This is a specialist technical group who create design standards and provide guidance on the implementation of those standards to our substation design delivery teams across ESB. This is a key role enabling the construction of a significant number of new substations needed as an enabler for our Net Zero strategy. The Senior Specialist Team Leader will manage a small specialist team and is required to provide technical guidance and expertise in all aspects of HV substation design. The role is also required to actively promote innovation in the work of the team, to manage the performance of the team to ensure a consistent high level of delivery in terms of meeting business requirements while maintaining the required commercial performance with regard to controlling costs and contribution. Key Responsibilities To lead a specialist team of professionals responsible for the preparation and ongoing development of standard primary substation designs for use by project teams in delivery of ESB substations. The designs will cover the full voltage range from MV to 400 kV. Key Responsibilities of the role include: Development of EHV, HV and MV standard primary designs, design tools and calculations. Development/updating of design work instructions. Provision of specialist design support to HV substation project delivery teams, particularly in relation to clearances and mechanical loadings on HV equipment. Provision of training to project delivery substation designers. Provision of specialist substation design support to other areas of ESB. Technical management of ESBN term contracts for busbar support structures, equipment support steelwork, HV conductors, HV connectors, earthing material including preparation of specifications, tender evaluation, acceptance testing and ongoing liaison with the manufacturer Co-ordination of and input into development of standard foundation and building designs Successful performance will require very close co-ordination with other engineering groups including Civil Engineering, Overhead Lines, HV Cables and with our partners in ESBN and EirGrid. Experience and Qualifications Essential Either 3rd level qualification or equivalent work experience is essential. A minimum of 9 years' experience in HV substation design. A proven track record in EHV and HV substation primary design, with an understanding of all elements of design, construction and commissioning. A comprehensive knowledge of the physical design principles used in Irish substations and IEC standards. Strong stakeholder and people management skills. Desirable A knowledge of BIM processes and systems. Competence in use of Bentley Microstation or of AutoCad Location This position will be based in ESB EMP offices in Dublin or Cork. Travel to substations around Ireland will also be a feature of this role.
