Overview of role:
The Clinical Nurse Manager (CNM) I is a key member of the point of care team and leads the clinical management of the Orthopaedic Ward with the CNM II. The Orthopaedic Inpatient Ward is a 21 bedded ward that specializes in a range of overnight and day case procedures in orthopaedic surgeries. The CNM I is pivotal in upholding the UPMC values in the clinical setting ensuring accessible, world-class care that puts patients first. The post holder will work in collaboration with the CNM II, and other members of the inter-professional team to ensure that the admission, transfer, and discharge of patient throughput processes are efficient, effective, and promote a nurse-led service. This role will suit an enthusiastic and motivated individual. This is a full-time permanent position.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
Professional / Clinical
* Assist the CNM II to patient care to ensure the highest professional standards using an evidence-based, care planning approach.
* Provide a high level of professional and clinical leadership to the point of care staff.
* Work with the CNM II to be responsible for the coordination, assessment, planning, delivery, and review of service user care by all staff in designated area.
* Provide safe, comprehensive nursing care to service users within the guidelines laid out by NMBI (Nursing & Midwifery Board of Ireland).
* Collaborate with service users, family, carers, and other staff in treatment/care.
* Assess, plan, implement and evaluate nursing care by personal involvement and supervising the activities of other qualified nurses.
* Regularly evaluate and monitor patient care by using the hospital's quality systems to ensure that care is delivered.
* Develop and promote good relationships with patients and carers.
* Work as an effective member of the multidisciplinary team promoting good teamwork and excellent patient care.
* Evaluate and further develop the philosophy, objectives, and goals of the department.
* Ensure that all staff are familiar with the use and care of all equipment, and that such equipment is maintained in good working condition.
* Ensure strict confidentiality of information regarding patients/residents is adhered to.
* Maintain effective working relationships with other departments.
* Contribute to quality and improvement team.
* Participate in Teams/Meetings/committees/leaderships appropriately communicating and working in cooperation with other team members.
Quality
* Participate in and encourage the development of evidence-based practice.
* Assist in unit audits and data collection.
* Monitor incident occurrence on the unit and follow up with the CNM II.
* Ensure patient satisfaction surveys are completed and adhere to the KPI.
* Input and close off incidents on the hospital’s Viclarity reporting system.
* Develop QIPs (Quality Improvement Plans) for the ward and see them through.
* Update Specific Consultant Protocols for the ward as needed.
* Ensure PSS (Patient Satisfaction Surveys) are completed for each patient on the ward prior to discharge.
Managerial Responsibilities:
* Provide necessary supervision, coordination, and deployment of nursing and support staff within the clinical setting to ensure the optimum delivery of care in the designated area.
* Assist the CNM II in maintaining bed management and patient flow by attending scheduling meetings and liaising with other CNMs and ADONs.
* Assist the CNM II in updating the database to manage clinical governance risk and compliance, investigate and follow through on complaints and incidents reporting, and closing incidents and learning opportunities.
* Assist the CNM II with management of staff training.
* Act as the senior clinical point of call for communication to the multidisciplinary team.
* Demonstrate effectiveness in making independent decisions when necessary and in providing/obtaining assistance and consultation when appropriate.
* Responsible for the maintenance of the accreditation standards within the ward and the coordination of staff nurses in the delegation of accreditation tasks.
* Assist the CNM II in workforce planning including assisting with the roster.
* Manage all resources efficiently and effectively.
* Lead on practice development within the clinical area.
* Assist the CNM II to lead and implement change using lean methodology.
* Work within a team to contribute to the formulation, development, and implementation of policies and procedures at area and hospital level.
* Actively participate in the Nursing Management structure by supporting the CNM II and deputizing in his/her absence when required to do so.
* Maintain all necessary clinical and administrative records and reporting arrangements.
* Facilitate nurses in clinical areas to assess, plan, implement, evaluate and document the care of patients within service.
* Orientate all students and new staff to the ward and assist the CNM II with onboarding for new staff.
* Perform other related duties as required. Take Manager on-call phone on rotation for UPMC Whitfield after 5pm and weekends.
Qualifications & Experience:
* Be registered, or eligible for registration in the General Division of the live Register of Nurses kept by NMBI.
* A minimum of five years’ experience as a staff nurse in an Orthopaedic Ward setting is required.
* At least 1 year’s experience in a management position in an Orthopaedic Ward is desirable.
* It is desirable to have completed a recognised post-registration course in Orthopaedic Nursing.
* Display evidence of continuing professional development.
* Demonstrate an awareness of HR policies and procedures.
* Working knowledge of Microsoft packages is essential.
* Will play an active role in the continuous improvement programme in the hospital using lean tools and methodology.
