The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Dublin is the largest diocese in Ireland with a Catholic population of almost 1 million, extending to almost 200 parishes bordering 5 counties. A permanent position of Diocesan Archivist has arisen to manage and preserve the important and extensive archival collections of the Archdiocese.
As the Diocesan Archivist and a member of the Heads of Office, you will be responsible for safeguarding records that reflect the history of the Archdiocese, its parishes, and certain other entities. This is a unique opportunity to shape the future of this extensive archive, ensuring its accessibility for research and historical reference, while maintaining compliance with Canonical and Civil legal requirements.
Key Responsibilities:
Archive Management:
1. Appraise, process, catalogue, and preserve archival materials to international best practices.
2. Oversee the acquisition and transfer of new records, ensuring their appropriate storage and organisation.
3. Develop policies for the long-term preservation of archival records.
Research and Inquiry Support:
1. Provide support to internal colleagues and external researchers.
Promotion of the Archives:
1. Organise and/or events, exhibitions, and publications that raise awareness of the archives and the history of the Diocese.
2. Foster engagement with external organisations on matters relating to the Archives.
3. Recruit, train, and supervise volunteers to assist in the Archives.
Compliance and Data Protection:
1. Ensure compliance with data protection laws and confidentiality standards in handling sensitive materials.
Key Qualifications and Skills:
1. A postgraduate qualification in Archives and Records Management (accredited by the Archives and Records Association or equivalent body).
2. At least 5 years’ experience working in a large archives. Managing such an archives would be an advantage.
3. Familiarity with archive standards such as ISAD (G).
4. Experience in engaging with researchers in an archival setting.
5. Proficient in Microsoft Office and comfortable with digital archival tools.
6. Strong understanding of legal and data protection requirements related to archival material.
7. A sound knowledge of the Catholic Church and its structures is essential.

2. Capable of working independently, especially in a lone working environment.
3. Excellent organisational skills and the ability to meet deadlines under pressure.
4. High level of confidentiality and sensitivity, especially with regard to sensitive records.
