Job Description
Purpose:
The Engineering Shift Supervisor is responsible for overseeing the maintenance and repair activities of the coach fleet, ensuring vehicles are safe, reliable, and available for service. This role involves supervising a team of mechanics and technicians, coordinating daily work schedules, and ensuring that all maintenance tasks are completed in compliance with company standards and regulatory requirements.
Key Responsibilities:
* Lead, manage, and supervise a team of mechanics and technicians responsible for the inspection, maintenance, and repair of buses.
* Assign daily tasks and manage workload distribution to ensure timely and efficient vehicle servicing.
* Support the team to ensure they meet quality and safety standards and ensure that all maintenance work is carried out to the highest standards and in compliance with safety regulations and company policies.
Maintenance Activities:
* Prioritise and plan maintenance activities based on operational needs, ensuring minimal vehicle downtime.
* Work with the Engineering Manager to plan for long-term maintenance needs and major repairs or overhauls.
Quality Checks and Inspections:
* Conduct regular quality checks and inspections on completed work to ensure adherence to safety and technical standards.
Problem Solving and Support:
* Assist mechanics in diagnosing and troubleshooting complex mechanical and electrical issues and provide support in the resolution of problems that arise during repairs or maintenance.
Fleet Management:
* Monitor inventory levels of parts, tools, and equipment necessary for the maintenance and repair of the fleet and coordinate with the Stock Controller.
Safety Culture:
* Promote and enforce a strong health and safety culture within the workshop, ensuring that all safety procedures are followed.
Record Keeping and Reporting:
* Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, repairs, and inspections using the company's fleet management system.
Leadership and Team Development:
* Conduct performance reviews and provide constructive feedback to mechanics and technicians to promote continuous improvement.
* Identify training needs within the team and coordinate training sessions to enhance technical skills and safety awareness.
Collaboration and Communication:
* Foster a collaborative and supportive team environment, encouraging open communication and problem-solving.
Emergency Response:
* Respond to emergency maintenance issues, such as vehicle breakdowns, to minimise service disruption.
Knowledge and Skills Requirements:
This role requires:
* Previous experience in a supervisory role within the bus or transport industry, with strong technical knowledge of bus maintenance and repair.
* Expertise in diagnosing and repairing mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems on buses and vehicles.
* Strong leadership and team management skills, with the ability to motivate and guide a team of mechanics.
Desirable Traits:
* Category B or D Driving licence.
* Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
* Ability to work autonomously and make decisions.
* Excellent attention to detail.
* Positive attitude to health and safety.
