UCD Post-doctoral Research Fellow Level 1, UCD School of Physics, Temporary 12 months post
UCD School of Physics, University College Dublin
Competition 018241
Applications are invited for a temporary post of a Post-doctoral Research Fellow Level 1 within UCD School of Physics.
This project seeks to develop and test a radically new, nanotechnology-based smart glazing technology that affords the end user the ability to modulate the thermal and optical transmission properties of glazing systems.
The glazing technology adapts to solar conditions, selectively blocking or allowing light to pass based on directionality (e.g., highly parallel sun rays) while maintaining visual transparency. The degree of energy throughput can be dynamically controlled in both directions. It integrates seamlessly with building energy management systems (BEMs) to optimize indoor temperatures, significantly reducing heating and cooling demands. By dynamically utilizing solar gain or rejection, the heating and air conditioning needs can be dramatically reduced.
This pioneering system features low energy consumption, requiring only brief, low-voltage pulses to adjust embedded non-isotropic molecules. It combines advanced directionality for radiation control with high aesthetic transparency, maintaining natural lighting and reducing glare, hence providing substantial savings in terms of carbon emissions and costs. Such innovation and disruption are vital for the glazing industry if our current buildings are to meet zero-net-carbon standards, noting that energy savings are our sharpest weapon in the reduction of energy consumption and carbon footprint.
As a part of this project and team, you will work on bringing the solution through development, real-world testing, and advanced lifecycle analysis. This project has already won several rounds in the Research Ireland national challenge fund competition, and we are looking for a researcher passionate about technological development, sustainability, and environmental impact.
Salary Range: €44,847 - €48,671 per annum. Appointment on the above range will be dependent on qualifications and experience.
Closing date: 12:00 noon (local Irish time) on the 28th of February 2025.
Applications must be submitted by the closing date and time specified. Any applications which are still in progress at the closing time of 12:00 noon (Local Irish Time) on the specified closing date will be cancelled automatically by the system. UCD are unable to accept late applications.
UCD do not require assistance from Recruitment Agencies. Any CVs submitted by Recruitment Agencies will be returned.
The PD1 position is intended for early stage researchers, either just after completion of a PhD or for someone entering a new area for the first time. If you have already completed your PD1 stage in UCD or will soon complete a PD1, or you are an external applicant whose total Postdoctoral experience, inclusive of the duration of the advertised post, would exceed 4 years, you should not apply and should refer to PD2 posts instead.
Prior to application, further information (including application procedure) should be obtained from the Work at UCD website: https://www.ucd.ie/workatucd/jobs/
