SACC Directorate plays a crucial role in delivering high-quality patient care from outpatient services to discharge. Our core principles are built around providing a safe, personal, and clinically effective service with clear accountability for all staff members.
Department Overview
The department is responsible for managing the anaesthesia services at St. James's Hospital, the largest acute academic hospital in Ireland affiliated with Trinity College Dublin (TCD). The hospital features a state-of-the-art operating suite and a dedicated stand-alone Day Case suite, comprising two major and one minor theatre, as well as a pre-operative assessment unit.
The Intensive Care service covers the General Intensive Care Unit, High Dependency, cardio-Thoracic ICU, Burns Unit, ventilated patients in the Coronary Care Unit, and an emergency consult service to the wards and Emergency Department.
Key Services
* Anaesthesia for adult patients in various specialties, including surgery for burns, Maxillo-facial, orthopaedics, and gynaecology, with a significant oncological surgery component in all these disciplines.
* Pain management services led by Dr OGara and Dr Fitzgerald, with a Pain Medicine Fellow and rotating registrar, offering a ward-based epidural and peripheral nerve block infusion service.
Teaching and Research
The department is involved in teaching undergraduate medical students, post-graduate anaesthesia and intensive care trainees, nursing, and paramedical staff. We participate in Primary and Final Fellowship pre-examination courses and the Intensive Care Diploma Course.
Our research activities are steadily increasing, with four college tutors who supervise training and several research Fellows undertaking doctorates attached to the department.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
The successful applicant will be responsible for:
* Assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation, and evaluation of treatment for patients according to professional standards under the supervision of the Consultant.
* Documenting all assessments, diagnoses, treatments, clinical notes, relevant contacts, and summaries in accordance with department and professional standards.
* Communicating results of assessments and recommendations to patients and relevant others as appropriate.
* Fostering close working relationships with colleagues and other relevant professionals to maximise patient potential.
* Attending clinics, participating in relevant meetings, case conferences, and ward rounds, followed by documentation of findings on each patient's chart, and following through with actions arising from the round.
* Maintaining professional standards in relation to confidentiality, ethics, and legislation.
* Seeking advice and assistance from the Consultant with any assigned cases or issues that prove to be beyond the scope of their professional competence.
* Participating in audits and research.
* Engaging in technological developments as they apply to patient and service administration.
Education and Training
The successful applicant will participate in mandatory and recommended training programmes in accordance with organisational/professional requirements.
They will also engage in professionaleducationanddevelopment to maintain expertise and stay up-to-date with best practice.
Health and Safety
The successful applicant will comply with policies, procedures, and safe professional practice of the Irish Healthcare System by adhering to relevant legislation, regulations, and standards.
They will document appropriately and report any near misses, hazards, and accidents and bring them to the attention of relevant/designated individual(s) in line with best practice.

Administrative
In consultation with the supervising Consultant, the successful applicant will ensure good working practice and adherence to standards of best practice.
They will promote quality by reviewing and evaluating the service, identifying changing needs, and opportunities to improve services.
They will ensure the maintenance of accurate records in line with best clinical governance, organisational requirements, and the Freedom of Information Act.
They will provide reports and other information/statistics as required.
They will engage in service audit and demonstrate the achievement of service objectives.
They will keep up-to-date with change and developments within the Irish Health Service.
