Overview of role:
UPMC Aut Even Hospital are recruiting a Healthcare Assistant. This is a full-time, permanent position.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
Key Responsibilities:
To assist in the activities of daily living as directed by and supervised by a Registered General Nurse.
Perform all duties according to hospital procedure, policy and guidelines.
Does not on any occasion perform a duty or procedure outside of the job description and in which he / she has not received training.
Perform all duties under the supervision and direction of a registered nurse and/or Ward Manager.
Accept and make every reasonable effort to correct mistakes and improve performance as required.
Ability to access policies on Q-Pulse and to log incidents as required.
Indirect Patient Care
Maintains a safe environment by following all safety guidelines and taking appropriate action when required.
Maintains infection control policies by following procedures as specifically outlined and maintaining areas specifically at risk such as:
Immediate Patient Environment
Sluice Room
Maintain stocks of linen, treatment room requirements, solutions and office stationary as requested by the Ward Manager or Deputy.
Maintain the cleanliness and sterility of bedside equipment.
Prepare trolleys for routine procedures using aseptic technique as appropriate.
Maintain a reduced noise level on the ward, particularly at night.
Maintain patient comfort by frequent bed making and careful management of linen and the environment.
Prepare the bed and patient environment for the post-operative patient.
Direct Patient Care
Practice universal precautions in all areas of direct and indirect patient care.
Provide the patient with a suitable environment for cleansing and dressing.
Assist the patient with bathing including skin, hair, nail and oral care.
Utilize back care principles in the lifting, moving or escorting of patients as taught.
Ensure compromised patients are turned frequently and pressure areas are attended to specific to that patient’s needs and as directed by the registered nurse on duty.
Reports all observations verbally to the registered nurse on duty that he / she would deem relevant to the patient.
Escort patients on walks or to other departments.
Assist patients with self-directed physiotherapy.
Assist patients to the bathroom.
Assist patients with bedpans or urinals as appropriate.
Maintain comfort of the incontinent patient on a regular basis.
Maintain cleanliness of genitalia area if a urinary catheter in situ.
Collect the following specimens only:
Urine for urinalysis
Mid-stream specimen of urine
Faeces for laboratory analysis
Assist with menu collection.
Assist patients who have difficulty eating or drinking.
Qualifications & Experience:
Evidence of FETAC Level 5 Education or equivalent life experience.
Previous Care Assistant experience within a Hospital / Nursing Home setting.
Understand how information is obtained, transmitted and stored during delivery of the care service.
Use positive communication skills when interacting with patients and relatives.
Demonstrate evidence of effective planning and organizing skill.
Demonstrate the ability to build and maintain relationships including the ability to work effectively as part of a multi disciplinary team.
Demonstrate evidence of ability to empathise with and treat patients, relatives and colleagues with dignity and respect.
Demonstrate a commitment to providing a quality service.
Demonstrate effective analytical, problem solving and decision-making skills.
Demonstrates excellent communication skills, including sufficient command of the English language so as to effectively carry out the duties and responsibilities of the role.
Attend in a timely manner all mandatory education sessions.
Time management skills.
Able to act quickly to address urgent matters.
