Join a dynamic team at Fort Henry National Historic Site of Canada, part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site, that provides guests with an understanding of historic military life through guided tours, interpretation, musical performances, and military demonstrations.
Position: Military Interpreter – Language Skills (Student)
Hours of Work: Variable, up to 36.25 hours per week (must be available on weekends, evenings, and holidays)
Division / Location: Fort Henry Guard, Fort Henry National Historic Site of Canada, Kingston, Ontario
Salary: $18.05 per hour
Period of Employment: May 5 to August 31, 2025
What Can I Expect to Do in This Role?
* Represent one of Kingston’s premier and internationally recognized tourism sites.
* Interpret the role of a British soldier in 1867 British North America.
* In period costume, interpret the history of Fort Henry by executing military drills, guiding tours in English and French, and participating in dramatizations, events, parades, and performances.
* Participate in daily training routines of the Fort Henry Guard Drill Squad, including drills, firearm demonstrations, artillery drills, and military etiquette.
* Maintain uniforms, historic weapons, and equipment through regular cleaning and polishing.
* Perform in front of visitors and attend special internal and external events.
* Provide excellent customer service to ensure visitors have an engaging and enjoyable experience.
* Work safely at all times and report unsafe activities to your supervisor.
* Embody the principles of equity, diversity, and inclusion in interactions with staff and guests.
How Do I Qualify?
Skills Needed:
Physical Skills:
* Good physical fitness to perform 19th-century British military drills and work outdoors in hot weather.
* Ability to learn and perform precise military drills quickly.
* Ability to work within a team in a fast-paced, live-performance environment.
Acting & Performance Skills:
* Ability to work under stress and meet high performance expectations.
* Capacity to learn and interpret Canadian and British military and social history circa 1867.
* Ability to portray a historical character in costume and role.
* Strong communication and interpersonal skills for program delivery and customer service.
Language Skills:
* Fluent in English and French.
Safety Skills:
* Willingness to learn safety protocols to ensure safety of all.
