My client is a global centre of Biopharmaceutical research excellence, headquartered in Dublin that provides training and research solutions to the global biopharmaceutical manufacturing sector. Their facility has over 100 employees and houses fully operational pilot plants, which are used for the delivery of biologics manufacturing training to industry as well as practical skills delivery in the higher and further education sector. They also house multiple research laboratories which are focused on biomanufacturing research and includes a dedicated facility (CONCEPT) for the early-stage development of biologics and advanced therapy products. Due to contributed expansion in this specific area, they are now looking to appoint a Business Manager to lead the development of their business development strategy for research and achieve its business development goals and objectives.
This is a fantastic opportunity for a highly motivated, commercially minded Business Manager with previous experience in the research sector and will have a key function in extending and maintaining the organisations research relationship with industry, which includes bringing fully industry-funded collaborative research projects to the facility and incorporating industry as partners in their funding applications to national and international funders. The Business Manager will work closely with their team of Principal Investigators in building these industry collaborations.
Responsibilities:
* Be responsible for leading and driving the organisations business development strategy for the CONCEPT facility and achieving its business goals and objectives.
* Identify and coordinate opportunities for collaboration with academic research performing organisations both nationally and internationally, with a particular focus on involving industry and securing research funding of scale from EU Horizon programmes. In tandem with this, liaise closely with the CONCEPT team to manage the business pipeline for CONCEPT by identifying new opportunities and fostering prospective academic and industry clients and projects, thereby enabling the CONCEPT team to focus on project delivery while revenue targets are attained.
* Interact with and harness the capabilities of state agencies, such as IDA Ireland, Enterprise Ireland and Research Ireland, and international funders, such as Horizon Europe or NGOs, to maximise opportunities for collaborative research projects of scale involving industry. Liaise with the Research Office, manage the process for identifying research funding opportunities of scale with a particular focus on EU Horizon programmes, with a particular focus on those programmes that involve industry.
* Lead the Commercialisation Sub-Committee, including the identification of commercial opportunities from their research programme and coordination of the decision-making process around commercial IP management. e.g. IP protection and commercialisation strategy and processes including identifying opportunities for commercial exploitation – e.g. via licensing, spin-out, spin-in, etc.
* Possess a detailed understanding of the needs of the biopharma and biotech industry and the capability to recognise and match those to the emerging technologies and capabilities of the organisations research teams.
* Identify and manage opportunities for research collaborations of scale with industry partners, which may include national and international funding organisations.
* Maintain a good understanding of the policies as they relate to research (e.g. governance, data management, ethics and intellectual property), and ensure these policies are taken into account during the process of contract development and negotiation.
* Work with the organisations marketing team to publicise their world class research capabilities and impact to target audiences.
* Ensure the accurate and timely preparation of governance/annual/quarterly and monthly metrics reports for the board, as requested.
Requirements:
* Candidates must have a Primary Degree or equivalent (NFQ Level 8) in a biopharma related area such as engineering or life sciences. A Master’s degree or PhD in a biopharma related area such as such as engineering or life sciences is desirable.
* 5-7 years’ relevant commercial experience in a business development or client management role in a relevant sector.
* A track record of developing research collaborations with Principal Investigators in a third level setting is essential.
* A thorough understanding of the biopharma industry.
* A strong communicator, particularly well-equipped with listening, influencing, and negotiating skills.
* Strong analytical, administrative and interpersonal skills with good judgement skills and an ability to influence and persuade at the highest level is essential. Flexibility and ability to work in a team environment are key skills required.
* Availability to travel nationally and internationally as required.
* Knowledge of relevant funding opportunities within EU Horizon programme, including knowledge of EU policies and networks relevant to the EU's R&D framework programme and related EU instruments
* An understanding and appreciation of the IP issues arising in the context of academic research.
