The Core Networking team is looking for a Sr. Network Development Engineer to join our Network Fabric Engineering (NFE) team. As a Network Development Engineer, you will be responsible for building, deploying and scaling the Amazon networks that support AWS, customers, and other business units, across multiple global datacenters.
AWS Core Networking is focused on building Data Centers and the network that allows Data Centers to function efficiently. We own the solutions that allow racks to be aggregated and Data Centers to be interconnected. Core Networking's goal is to balance efficiency, performance and reliability to allow customers access to their applications and data.
Key job responsibilities
Network Development Engineers perform high quality network and/or systems operations, deployments, scaling, technology refresh, sustaining engineering, best practices application, optimization, internal/external customer interactions, and produce appropriate technical documentation.
1. Your core job responsibility is to create network designs, services, and deployment procedures that solve for many requirements.
2. Together, you and your leadership team will decide on the projects that best support your team’s mission.
3. You, and your team, will design ahead of customer or technology needs, always predicting and solving for problems that have not yet occurred. This takes the form of creating and defending High Level Design (HLD) and Low Level Design (LLD) documents, working with internal stakeholders to influence technology roadmaps, constructing and testing your solutions, and providing support to the teams that will deploy and operate these designs.
4. You will create and automate deployment processes that increases quality and velocity.
5. You will work closely with our internal customers on designs/solutions; bringing those designs/solutions from concept to production.
A day in the life
1. Work in a 24x7 team on call rotation, with ability to drive into workplace for critical events/needs.
2. Manage customers during problem resolution and operating efficiently under pressure.
3. Sit at the computer during scheduled work hours with appropriate breaks while maintaining a high level of alertness and attention to detail.
4. Travel to data center/network sites and Amazon/customer offices as needed.
About the team
AWS NFE (Network Fabric Engineering) owns datacenter network services that provide unconstrained connectivity to our customers, such as EC2, EBS, S3 and Amazon CDO Services. They own the networks internal to the datacenters end to end, including scaling and operational functions, for both traditional datacenters. They also own newer AWS offerings such as Outposts and Local Zones.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
1. Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or equivalent experience.
2. 8+ years of IP networking fundamentals and extensive experience in the application of IP protocols as well as network analysis fundamentals and robust troubleshooting skills.
3. 8+ years of experience with major internet routing protocols; specifically, BGP, OSPF, MPLS, RSVP and ISIS in a large enterprise environment.
4. 8+ years working with major network operating systems such as Cisco IOS and/or Junos.
5. 3+ years experience with Unix/Linux skills and the ability to script in Python, Perl, shell.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
1. Master's in Computer Science, MBA, or equivalent experience.
2. Senior or Lead Engineer experience at other organizations.
3. Expert-level certifications (e.g. CCIE, JNCIE) a plus.
4. Expert-level scripting and or automation skills in a network environment.
5. Software development/programming skills are a plus.
