Legal Counsel and Legal Counsel/Specialist
Laya Healthcare is seeking to recruit two Legal Counsels. These are hybrid-based roles; Laya offices are located in Little Island, Cork.
The role:
The Legal & Regulatory Affairs Department provides all the legal management and advice required to support the business, customers, and team of Laya Healthcare.
1. To act as a legal counsel in support of the Head of Legal & Regulatory Affairs in the provision of business-focused legal/regulatory advice and guidance as required.
2. Provide advice to the business on all aspects of the GDPR and other data protection/privacy-related matters.
3. Provide advice to the business on the emerging and evolving data and digital legal landscape including DORA, the EU Accessibility Act, the Data Act, etc.
4. Act as an ambassador for the Laya brand and values at all times.
5. Provide practical, commercially focused legal advice, guidance, and support to the legal function and the Laya team in the delivery of the company strategy and vision.
6. Research and evaluate different risk factors regarding business decisions and operations.
7. Liaise with AXA Legal and other departments as required.
8. Liaise with regulatory authorities as required.
9. Communicate with and manage external counsel and costs as required.
10. Track ongoing legal work.
11. Research changes in legislation and industry best practices and work proactively to update contract templates and company policies accordingly.
12. Provide legal training to the business on areas of expertise.
13. Advise on commercial/corporate contracts.
14. Advise on agreements generally.
15. Review and advise on operational and strategic legal matters in relation to private medical insurance member policies and policy wording.
16. Provide legal advice on a variety of matters including litigation, employment law, FSPO, consumer protection, and company law.
17. Assist and support other areas within the business including the Compliance, Procurement, and Third-Party Risk Management functions.
18. Ability to identify, assess, and mitigate legal risk across the business. Ability to make decisions but to know when to seek further advice.
Minimum Requirements:
1. Law Degree/Diploma or equivalent required. Professional Qualification from Law Society, Kings Inns, or equivalent.
2. 3+ years of similar experience post-qualification in a legal firm or in-house environment.
3. Experience in advising on the GDPR and other data protection/privacy-related matters required.
4. Experience in the digital legal landscape including DORA, the EU Accessibility Act, the Data Act, etc. desirable.
5. Commercial contracts drafting and review experience desirable.
6. Excellent communication skills, negotiation skills, strong attention to detail, and a commercial mindset.
7. Demonstrated ability to prioritize workload in a fast-paced, changing environment.
8. Ability to work on own initiative but also as a team.
Legal Specialist/Legal Counsel
The role:
The primary function of the Legal Specialist is to provide support in the areas of contracts, complaints and dispute resolution, privacy, and other legal areas as may be required to support the business and the team.
1. Preparing and/or reviewing contracts on behalf of the business and working with contract owners, the procurement team, and others in this regard.
2. Assisting with advising the business on member complaints and appeals, including matters referred to the FSPO.
3. Assisting with the management of litigation issues.
4. Assisting with managing the relationship with external legal counsel.
5. Evaluating legal risks and providing support to mitigate issues.
6. Assisting with assessing the impact of new and pending legislation and its effect on the business.
7. Assisting with corporate governance matters.
8. Assisting with data protection matters.
9. Advising non-legal team members on legal language and contract matters.
10. Ability to assess contract risk. Ability to identify and mitigate legal risk across the business.
11. Ability to make decisions but to know when to seek further advice.
Minimum Requirements:
1. 2+ years of similar experience post-qualification in a legal firm or in-house environment, or otherwise working in the health insurance industry.
2. Commercial contract and agreement drafting and review experience desirable.
3. Experience with dispute handling and/or litigation an advantage.
4. Excellent communication skills, negotiation skills, strong attention to detail, and a commercial mindset.
5. Demonstrated ability to prioritize workload in a fast-paced, changing environment.
6. Ability to work on own initiative but also as a team.
