The Department of Clinical Microbiology is a consultant led service that provides a comprehensive range of laboratory tests as well as consultation in microbiology, infectious diseases and antibiotic utilisation and provision of statistical and cumulative data for infectious disease monitoring.
Microbiology is a regional laboratory service, in addition to CUH/CUMH patients, the laboratory accepts samples from other hospitals which have no Microbiology laboratory facility (e.g.
St. Finbarr's Hospital, Bantry and Mallow General Hospitals).
In addition to diagnostic services, education and training are an integral part of the daily routine of the department, with established links to the Medical and Science Faculties at UCC and the Biological Sciences Department of MTU.
The laboratory is also involved in teaching both medical and biomedical science students and is involved in collaborative research work with clinical colleagues.
The department is accredited by the Royal College of Pathologists for specialist training in Clinical Microbiology.
Services offered include:
· Routine Bacteriology: Examination of Urine, Sputum, Blood, CSF and Swabs etc.
· Serological testing for Hepatitis, HIV, Syphilis, Leptospirosis
· Molecular testing for Chlamydia trachomatis, N. gonorrhoea, enteric pathogens and respiratory viruses is performed in-house.
· Parasitology includes the investigation of faeces specimens for evidence of infestation.
· Mycology: Examination of specimens such as skin scrapings and specimens from systemic infections for the presence of pathogenic fungi.
· TB Laboratory: The investigation of specimens for Mycobacterium spp.
