Overview of role:
UPMC Whitfield Hospital are recruiting a Theatre Nurse on a full-time, permanent basis. The role involves working as a member of a team of nurses in the UPMC Whitfield Hospital theatre department, providing high-quality, patient-centered care for patients and their families. The theatre nurse will assist in a wide range of specialties including orthopaedic, general, ophthalmology, gynae, ENT, pain management, urology, and vascular. Assistance may also be provided to anaesthetic and PACU, and the nurse will develop specialist knowledge of nursing practice relating to their clinical area.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
* Clinical:
* Ensure the delivery of the highest possible standard of care to all patients.
* Act as preceptor to pre-registration students, mentor new clinical staff, and support all colleagues when needed.
* Liaise with link lecturers from affiliated nurse education departments to maintain UPMC Whitfield Hospital as a recognized learning environment for student nurses.
* Develop and maintain effective communication and interpersonal relationships with all members of the multi-disciplinary team.
* Support the theatre manager by meeting agreed responsibilities set out by the Theatre Manager or the Director of Nursing.
* Identify and discuss nursing/patient needs with the multidisciplinary team, patients, and carers.
* Maintain high standards of communication, both written and verbal.
* Maintain own professional registration and submit to HR department for verification yearly.
* Develop and maintain knowledge of clinical risk reporting policy, occupational health, facilities management, patient moving and handling, resuscitation/basic life support, health and safety, and departmental financial & budgetary controls.
* Undertake a proactive approach in achieving and maintaining accreditation standards within UPMC Whitfield Hospital.
Quality & Audit:
* Participate and lead in clinical audit and research activity within the field.
* Provide written reports of research/clinical audit as necessary.
* Participate in local audits in preparation for annual accreditation.
* Work closely with the Quality and Patient Safety team to ensure the department meets accreditation standards.
Health and Safety:
* Uphold UPMC Whitfield Hospital’s policy requirements in relation to fire, infection control, radiation safety, and health and safety at work regulations.
* Identify potential risks for all staff, patients, and visitors.
* Observe a general duty of care for health, safety, and well-being of self, colleagues, visitors, and patients.
Professional / Education:
* Develop necessary skills to act as shift coordinator/Team Leader.
* Manage workload to ensure patient care needs are met.
* Develop appropriate IT skills for efficient work in the clinical environment.
* Continually risk assess the theatre environment.
* Practice and demonstrate research-based nursing care.
* Undertake any specific training required for the role.
Qualifications & Experience:
* Be a Registered General Nurse with The Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI).
* At least 2 years post-registration theatre experience – essential.
* Evidence of ongoing CPD.
* Hold a relevant theatre qualification – desirable.
