Design Engineer
In the Research and Development (R&D) team, this role is responsible for delivering new products to the business and continuously improving existing products, processes, and people.
The Design Engineer participates in all design-related engineering and technical activities, contributing to the delivery of New Product Introduction (NPI) projects and developing the competence centre within R&D.
Key Responsibilities:
* Manage the product lifecycle of all products and solutions in the portfolio through mechanical design activities.
* Maintain a theoretical approach to design technology and apply practical knowledge in planning, specifying, problem-solving, and solution evaluation.
* Promote innovation and technological advancements by participating in or specifying research in design.
* Fulfill activities on time and budget to meet programme requirements.
* Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of design principles, materials selection, and optimisation, supplier design capability assessment, 3D modelling, and 'material master' design BOM product lifecycle management.
* Contribute to continuous improvement by reviewing technology, processes, and outcomes and implementing new initiatives.
* Collaborate with third-party design and design for manufacture expertise as required to meet NPI and Value Improvement (VI) process programmes.
* Engage in ongoing professional development to meet programme requirements.
* Communicate information and knowledge to support effective decision-making.
* Develop and maintain constructive relationships with colleagues.
* Perform supplier liaison according to vendor management process requirements.
* Benchmark customer needs and markets, working with others to enhance customer service.
* Manage complex challenges in delivery, prioritisation, time-cost-specification, and quality of NPI activities.
Required Qualifications:
* Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of engineering principles in relevant technology and competence centre fields.
* Strong background in product design and development, and/or continuous improvement in a technical/engineering/manufacturing discipline.
* Awareness of effective planning and implementation of design activity.
* Strong analytical and critical reasoning skills, along with solution implementation capabilities.
* Excellent communication and networking skills, combined with strong drive, initiative, and self-motivation.
* Ability to balance competing priorities and drive issues to completion.
* Awareness of market trends and customer needs.
Desirable Criteria:
* Ideal experience in areas such as materials selection, sheet metal design, complex plastic and composite moulding part and tool design, design for manufacture and assembly, smart controls, thermodynamic and hydronic circuit design and control, quality management systems and processes.
* Advanced technical expertise and working knowledge of other disciplines.
* Degree and/or professional qualification in a relevant technical/engineering discipline or substantial hands-on operational experience in Mechanical Design R&D/Engineering environment.
* Significant post-qualification experience in a wide range of engineering and new product design and introduction roles.
